Honest Reviews From Our Clients
Homeowners across Southwest Virginia trust SWVA Mechanical for HVAC services that are done right the first time. Here’s what real customers have to say about their experience:
We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.
I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.
Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.
Called with HVAC issue on Monday had a resolution by Tuesday morning. Owner Nick is amazing. Goes above and beyond for his customers. Technician that came out was 5 star! Polite, conscientious regarding cleanliness, and super helpful. Pricing is extremely reasonable. I will never use another company!
Nick Cross and his team are amazing. Did a great job for us. They are polite, professional and knowledgable. Our challenge is with a house built in 1913 and their work has given us more control over our HVAC system and made our living space more comfortable. Price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.
Samuel came out and did a great job!! He serviced my unit inside and outside. Company was amazing to begin with. Answered and returned my calls every time. They were prompt in letting me know when they would arrive and informed me of all repairs before doing anything. Amazing job!! Highly recommended.
Highly Recommend! Brian and his team done an outstanding job installing my new Mitsubishi mini splits. I couldn’t have asked for a better HVAC Team than SWVA Mechanicals!
I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!
I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Nick and Brian explained everything in detail and Jesse and Sam did our install. We are very happy with the entire process. Mini Split Maintenance Service
An annual maintenance visit is the best way to care for your hard-working ductless mini-split system. This is much more than a simple filter cleaning; it is a comprehensive tune-up. Our service is designed to deep clean the indoor units and verify the performance of the outdoor unit. This process restores your system’s efficiency, improves indoor air quality, and extends its operational lifespan. Because mini-splits provide both heating and cooling, this yearly service is critical for year-round comfort. It ensures your ductless system is ready for any season. We are committed to keeping your system in pristine condition.
The most critical part of any mini-split maintenance service is a deep cleaning of the indoor heads. The internal components of these units, including the coil and the cylindrical blower wheel, are a prime spot for dust, mold, and mildew to grow. Our technicians will carefully disassemble the unit’s casing to gain full access to these components. We then use specialized cleaning solutions and tools to thoroughly clean the blower wheel and the evaporator coil. This essential step removes contaminants, eliminates odors, and restores proper airflow. It is vital for both performance and your health.
While we perform a deep cleaning, we also stress the importance of user maintenance. The reusable mesh filters in your indoor units are your first line of defense against dust and debris. We recommend homeowners remove and rinse these filters every four to six weeks. During our professional service, we will perform a more thorough cleaning and inspection of these filters. We ensure they are in good condition and fit properly within the unit. Keeping these filters clean is the easiest way to maintain good airflow and keep the internal components from getting excessively dirty between professional visits.
Each indoor mini-split head has a condensate drain line to remove moisture during the cooling season. This drain line can become clogged with slime, dust, and algae over time. When a clog occurs, water cannot escape and will back up, often leading to leaks that can damage your walls and floors. As part of our maintenance service, our technicians will flush and clear the condensate drain line for each indoor unit. This preventative step ensures that moisture is always channeled safely outside your home. It protects your property from water damage.
The outdoor condenser unit also requires regular attention to perform at its best. Our technicians will inspect and clean the outdoor unit’s coil, removing any leaves, dirt, or debris. A clean coil allows the system to transfer heat effectively, which is essential for both heating and cooling efficiency. We will also check that the unit is level on its pad and has adequate clearance for airflow. All electrical connections at the outdoor unit are inspected and tightened to ensure safe and reliable operation. This service keeps the heart of your system in top shape.
After cleaning and inspecting the system, we perform a series of performance tests. If performance seems low, we can check the system’s refrigerant charge, though leaks are rare in these systems. We will turn on each indoor unit in both heating and cooling modes. The technician will then measure the temperature of the air coming out of each head. This allows us to verify that each zone is heating and cooling effectively. This final check confirms that your system is operating at its peak performance level after the service.
The easiest way to care for your ductless system is with our annual mini-split maintenance agreement. This is especially valuable for homes with multi-zone systems. A maintenance plan ensures that each of your indoor units and the outdoor unit receives the detailed cleaning and service it needs every year. Our plans make this essential service affordable and easy to remember. We handle the scheduling for you and provide benefits like priority service and discounts on any needed repairs. It is the smartest way to protect your ductless system.

Most Common Mini Split Maintenance Questions
A ductless mini-split is a major investment in your home’s comfort and efficiency. Proper maintenance is key to protecting that investment. We have answered some of the most common questions our Lebanon customers ask about caring for their mini-split systems.
Yes, absolutely. In fact, regular, thorough cleaning is the single most important maintenance task for a ductless mini-split. The indoor units are constantly pulling in your home’s air. This air contains dust, pet dander, pollen, and microscopic airborne spores. These contaminants get trapped inside the dark, damp environment of the indoor head. Over time, this buildup can lead to the growth of mold and mildew on the internal coil and blower wheel. Professional deep cleaning is essential to remove these contaminants.
This buildup has several negative consequences. First, it restricts airflow, which makes the system less efficient and forces it to run longer to heat or cool a room. This leads directly to higher electricity bills. Second, the mold and bacteria growing inside the unit can be circulated back into the air you breathe. This can lead to musty odors and can aggravate allergies and respiratory conditions. A professional deep cleaning service eliminates these problems. It restores efficiency and ensures you are breathing clean, healthy air.
While cleaning the outer filter is a good start, it is not enough. The fine dust and spores pass through the filter and stick to the internal components. A professional service involves disassembling the unit’s housing to access and meticulously clean these parts. This is the only way to ensure the system is truly clean. This service is vital for the performance of the unit and the quality of your indoor air.
As a homeowner, you play an important role in your mini-split’s upkeep by cleaning its reusable filters. We recommend that you clean the filters every four to six weeks, or more often if you have pets or live in a dusty area. The process is very simple. You just need to open the front panel of the indoor unit, slide the mesh filters out, and gently rinse them under lukewarm water. You should let them air dry completely before sliding them back into the unit. Never use heat to dry the filters, as it can damage them.
This regular cleaning provides two major benefits. First, it helps to maintain strong airflow, which is critical for your system’s efficiency. A clogged filter will make your system work harder and use more energy. Second, it serves as the first line of defense, capturing larger dust particles and preventing them from reaching the internal components. This helps to keep the internal blower wheel and coil cleaner for longer between professional maintenance visits. It is a simple five-minute task that has a big impact.
While homeowner filter cleaning is important, it does not replace the need for an annual professional deep cleaning. The mesh filters cannot capture the smallest particles, which are what stick to the internal components and can lead to mold growth. The professional service provides a much deeper level of cleaning that a homeowner cannot perform. The combination of your regular filter cleaning and our annual service is the perfect recipe for a healthy, efficient mini-split system.
Failing to properly clean your mini-split system can lead to a host of problems. The most immediate impact will be on the system’s efficiency. A layer of dirt and grime on the indoor coil and blower wheel will severely restrict airflow. This forces the system to run much longer to achieve the desired temperature, which can cause a significant increase in your electricity bills. You will be paying more for less comfort. The system’s heating and cooling capacity will be noticeably diminished over time.
A dirty mini-split can also negatively impact your health. The dark, damp interior of the indoor unit is an ideal breeding ground for mold, mildew, and bacteria. Every time the system runs, it can circulate these contaminants throughout the air in your room. This can lead to unpleasant musty odors and can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms. For individuals with respiratory sensitivities, a dirty mini-split can pose a genuine health concern. A professional deep cleaning eliminates these harmful growths and restores healthy indoor air.
Finally, a lack of maintenance can lead to equipment failure. A clogged condensate drain line can cause water to leak down your walls, causing damage to your home. A blower motor that is constantly struggling against restricted airflow can burn out prematurely. While mini-splits are very reliable, they are not immune to problems caused by neglect. Regular cleaning is the best way to ensure a long and trouble-free service life from your ductless system.
There are some maintenance tasks you can and should do, while others must be left to a professional. As a homeowner, your primary responsibility is to regularly clean the washable filters on your indoor units. This is a simple and safe task that is crucial for maintaining good airflow. You should also keep the outdoor unit clear of any debris like leaves, grass clippings, or snow. Ensuring there are at least a few feet of clearance around the outdoor unit will help it operate efficiently. These simple steps are very helpful.
However, the critical deep cleaning of the internal components should only be performed by a trained technician. This process requires partially disassembling the indoor unit’s housing to get access to the blower wheel and coil. Our technicians use specialized, low-pressure sprayers and non-corrosive cleaning solutions that are safe for the delicate components. Using the wrong tools or chemicals could easily damage the unit. A professional knows how to perform this service safely and effectively without harming the equipment.
Furthermore, the maintenance of the outdoor unit involves working with high-voltage electrical components and pressurized refrigerant lines. This is extremely dangerous for anyone without the proper training, tools, and safety equipment. An expert technician can safely inspect these parts and check the system’s performance. For the health of your system and your own personal safety, please leave the annual deep cleaning and technical checks to the professionals at SWVA Mechanical.
The time required for a mini-split maintenance visit depends directly on the number of indoor units, or heads, you have. For a simple single-zone system with one indoor unit and one outdoor unit, the service can typically be completed in about 60 to 90 minutes. This provides enough time for our technician to thoroughly deep clean the indoor head, clean the outdoor unit, and perform all the necessary performance and safety checks. It is a very efficient process for a single-zone system.
For a multi-zone system, the service will take longer because each indoor unit requires its own individual deep cleaning. You can generally plan for about 45 to 60 minutes of service time for each additional indoor head. For example, a common three-zone system might take between two and a half to three and a half hours to complete. The technician must spend the necessary time at each indoor unit to disassemble, clean, and reassemble it properly. This meticulous, room-by-room approach is essential for a quality job.
When you schedule your maintenance with us, we will ask about the number of indoor units you have. This will allow us to give you a more accurate estimate of how long our technician will be at your home. While we always work efficiently, our priority is to be thorough. We will dedicate the time required to ensure every one of your indoor units is perfectly clean and your entire system is operating at its best.
A bad, musty odor coming from your mini-split is a classic sign that it is overdue for a professional deep cleaning. That smell is typically caused by mold, mildew, and bacteria that have started to grow inside the indoor unit. The evaporator coil inside the head gets cold and wet from condensation during the cooling process. This dark and damp environment is the perfect place for airborne mold spores and bacteria to settle and multiply. When you turn the unit on, the blower fan pushes air over these contaminants, spreading the smelly, musty odor throughout your room.
The smell is not just unpleasant; it is also a sign that you could be breathing in harmful airborne contaminants. This can be a particular problem for people with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions. The only way to permanently get rid of the smell is to eliminate the source. This requires a professional deep cleaning service. A technician will need to access the internal components and use specialized cleaning agents to kill and remove the mold and mildew growth. Simply spraying a disinfectant into the front of the unit will not solve the problem.
Once your system has been professionally cleaned, the bad odor will be completely gone. To prevent it from returning quickly, it is important to regularly clean your washable filters every month. This will reduce the amount of “food,” like dust and organic debris, that reaches the inner coil. However, only an annual professional deep cleaning can ensure the internal components remain free of significant microbial growth. A clean mini-split is a healthy mini-split.
Yes, the cost of maintenance for a multi-zone mini-split system is higher than for a single-zone system. The price of the service is typically based on the number of indoor units, or heads, that need to be serviced. The reason for this is that the most time-consuming and labor-intensive part of the maintenance process is the deep cleaning of each individual indoor unit. Each head must be separately disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled. Therefore, a system with more indoor units will require more time and labor to service properly.
When you request a quote for maintenance, we will always ask how many indoor units you have. This allows us to provide you with an accurate and transparent price for the complete service. There is usually a base price for the first indoor unit and the outdoor unit, plus an additional charge for each subsequent indoor head. This pricing structure is fair and directly reflects the amount of work required. It ensures you are only paying for the service you need based on the size of your specific system.
While the cost is higher for a larger system, the value is immense. It is crucial that every indoor unit is cleaned annually to protect your air quality and the system’s efficiency. A maintenance agreement is an excellent way to manage the cost of upkeep for a multi-zone system. Our plans often provide a discount on the service, making it the most affordable way to care for your entire system. This ensures every one of your comfort zones is clean and healthy.
Yes, in many cases, a professional maintenance visit can make your mini-split system operate more quietly. The most common cause of new or unusual noise from the indoor unit is an imbalanced blower wheel. The blower wheel is a long, cylindrical fan that moves the air. Over time, it can accumulate a significant, uneven layer of dust and debris. This uneven weight distribution can put the fan out of balance. As it spins at high speed, this imbalance will create a noticeable humming, buzzing, or vibrating noise.
During our deep cleaning service, our technicians meticulously clean every single blade of the blower wheel. This removes the built-up debris and restores the fan to its original, balanced state. Once it is clean and balanced, the noisy vibration will disappear, and the unit will run as quietly as it did when it was new. This is one of the most immediate and satisfying benefits of our maintenance service. Customers are often surprised at how much quieter their units are after a cleaning.
Noise from the outdoor unit can also be addressed during maintenance. A rattling sound might be caused by a loose access panel, which a technician can easily tighten. Debris like leaves or twigs hitting the fan can also cause noise, which will be resolved when the unit is cleaned. By cleaning and inspecting all the moving parts of your system, our maintenance service can eliminate many common sources of noise and restore the quiet comfort you expect from your mini-split.
