Honest Reviews From Our Clients
Homeowners across Southwest Virginia trust SWVA Mechanical for HVAC services that are done right the first time. Here’s what real customers have to say about their experience:
We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.
I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.
Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.
Called with HVAC issue on Monday had a resolution by Tuesday morning. Owner Nick is amazing. Goes above and beyond for his customers. Technician that came out was 5 star! Polite, conscientious regarding cleanliness, and super helpful. Pricing is extremely reasonable. I will never use another company!
Nick Cross and his team are amazing. Did a great job for us. They are polite, professional and knowledgable. Our challenge is with a house built in 1913 and their work has given us more control over our HVAC system and made our living space more comfortable. Price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.
Samuel came out and did a great job!! He serviced my unit inside and outside. Company was amazing to begin with. Answered and returned my calls every time. They were prompt in letting me know when they would arrive and informed me of all repairs before doing anything. Amazing job!! Highly recommended.
Highly Recommend! Brian and his team done an outstanding job installing my new Mitsubishi mini splits. I couldn’t have asked for a better HVAC Team than SWVA Mechanicals!
I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!
I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Dual Fuel System Maintenance Service
The key to properly maintaining a dual fuel system is a biannual service schedule. These advanced systems require two separate maintenance visits each year to remain in top condition. This approach ensures that both of your heating and cooling sources receive the specific care they need. One visit is scheduled in the spring to prepare the electric heat pump for the summer cooling season. A second visit is then scheduled in the fall to prepare the gas furnace for the winter heating season. This targeted, two-visit approach is the industry standard for dual fuel system care. It is the only way to guarantee reliability and efficiency from both components.
Our spring maintenance visit is focused entirely on your system’s electric heat pump. This service is very similar to a standard air conditioning tune-up. Our technicians will thoroughly clean the outdoor and indoor coils to ensure optimal heat transfer. We will check the refrigerant level to confirm it meets precise manufacturer specifications for efficient operation. All electrical components, including capacitors and contactors, will be inspected and tested. We also lubricate motors and check the overall system operation in cooling mode. This comprehensive service ensures your heat pump is ready to cool your home efficiently all summer long. It also prepares it for the moderate heating it will provide in the fall.
The fall maintenance visit is dedicated to the performance and safety of the gas furnace component. Our technicians will clean and inspect the furnace burners to ensure clean and efficient combustion. We will check the gas pressure and test the ignitor or pilot light for reliable operation. One of the most critical steps is a detailed inspection of the heat exchanger for any cracks or defects. This is a crucial safety check to prevent any risk of carbon monoxide leaks into your home. We also clean and inspect the blower motor and test all furnace safety controls. This service ensures your furnace is ready to provide powerful, reliable heat on the coldest winter days.
A unique and critical part of our dual fuel maintenance is the inspection of the control system. The specialized thermostat is the brain of your entire hybrid system. Our technicians will verify that the thermostat is communicating correctly with both the heat pump and the furnace. We will test the outdoor temperature sensor to ensure it is providing accurate readings. We also confirm that the pre-programmed “balance point” or switchover setting is still appropriate for your system and local utility rates. Verifying the proper function of these controls is essential for maximizing your energy savings. It ensures the automatic transition between fuel sources happens exactly as it should.
Thorough cleaning is a cornerstone of our maintenance service for both parts of your system. For the heat pump, clean coils are essential for the efficient transfer of heat. Dirty coils force the compressor to work much harder, which wastes electricity and causes unnecessary wear and tear. For the furnace, clean burners are necessary for safe and complete fuel combustion. A clean blower wheel is also vital for ensuring proper airflow throughout your home’s ductwork system. Our commitment to cleaning every critical component helps lower your energy bills. It also extends the operational lifespan of your valuable equipment.
Safety is our top priority during every dual fuel maintenance appointment. The fall furnace tune-up includes multiple critical safety inspections. We test all safety shutoff controls to ensure they will function correctly in an emergency. Inspecting the furnace’s venting system, or flue, is another key step to confirm that all combustion byproducts are being safely directed outside. For the heat pump, we focus on electrical safety by tightening all connections and testing components to prevent fire hazards. You can have complete peace of mind knowing your system has been professionally inspected for safe operation.
To make this essential biannual service easy and affordable, we offer comprehensive dual fuel maintenance agreements. This is the most convenient and cost-effective way to care for your hybrid heat system. Our plans are designed to include both the spring and fall service visits at a discounted rate. Plan members also receive valuable benefits like priority scheduling for repairs and discounts on parts. We manage the schedule for you, reminding you when it is time for each tune-up. A maintenance plan protects your investment and ensures you get the full benefits of your advanced system.

Most Common Dual Fuel System Maintenance Questions
A dual fuel system is a sophisticated piece of equipment that requires proper care. Homeowners in Lebanon often have specific questions about how to best maintain their investment. We have answered the most common questions about this essential service below.
A dual fuel system must be serviced twice per year to ensure the proper function of all its components. This is different from a traditional system that may only need one annual visit. The reason for the biannual schedule is that you have two distinct systems, a heat pump and a furnace. Each system has unique parts and needs that must be addressed before its primary season of use. A single annual visit is not sufficient to prepare both the heating and cooling components for the year. Adhering to a twice-yearly schedule is essential for the system’s health.
The ideal schedule involves one service visit in the spring and a second visit in the fall. The spring appointment focuses entirely on the electric heat pump. Our technicians perform a comprehensive tune-up to prepare the unit for the summer cooling season. The fall appointment is dedicated to the gas furnace component. We perform a full safety inspection and tune-up to ensure the furnace is ready for the cold winter months. This targeted, seasonal approach ensures that each part of your hybrid system is clean, safe, and operating at peak efficiency. It is the industry best practice for dual fuel maintenance.
Failing to service the system twice a year can lead to significant problems. If you only service the furnace in the fall, you are neglecting the heat pump before its heavy use in the summer. This can lead to poor cooling performance, higher electricity bills, and a potential breakdown on a hot day. Conversely, only servicing the heat pump in the spring ignores the critical safety and performance needs of the gas furnace. This could lead to a heating failure in winter or even create a safety hazard. Proper biannual maintenance is non-negotiable for these systems.
During our spring maintenance visit, our entire focus is on the electric heat pump. Our technicians will thoroughly clean the outdoor condenser coil and the indoor evaporator coil. We will check the system’s refrigerant charge to ensure it is at the precise level for optimal cooling. All electrical components, including the capacitor, contactor, and wiring, are inspected and tested. We lubricate the fan motor and check for proper airflow. We also test the system’s operation in cooling mode and calibrate the thermostat if necessary. This prepares the system for efficient summer performance.
In the fall, our maintenance visit is dedicated to the gas furnace. The technician will clean the furnace burners and the flame sensor to ensure reliable ignition. We perform a detailed inspection of the heat exchanger, a critical safety component. We check and test all safety controls, including the high-limit switch. The technician will also inspect the gas valve and measure the gas pressure. The furnace’s venting system is checked for any blockages or leaks. Finally, we test the furnace’s heating cycle to ensure it operates safely and effectively.
During both visits, we also pay special attention to the components that are unique to the dual fuel system. Our technician will inspect the outdoor temperature sensor to ensure it is reading accurately. We will verify the balance point setting in the smart thermostat to confirm it is still correct. We will also test the system’s ability to switch correctly between the heat pump and the furnace. This comprehensive check of the controls ensures the “brain” of your system is working perfectly. It is a critical part of maintaining a hybrid heat system.
While it may seem tempting to save money by only servicing one half of your dual fuel system, we strongly advise against it. The heat pump and the furnace are not independent; they are two parts of a single, integrated system. They share the same ductwork and the same indoor blower motor. The performance and efficiency of one component directly impacts the other. For example, if the shared blower motor is dirty and struggling, it will reduce the efficiency of both your heat pump and your furnace. Neglecting one part inevitably harms the entire system’s performance.
Proper maintenance is about ensuring reliable operation year-round. If you choose to only service your furnace in the fall, you are leaving your heat pump unprepared for the summer. This significantly increases the risk of a breakdown during a heatwave when you need cooling the most. Similarly, only servicing the heat pump in the spring leaves your furnace uninspected before winter. This means you are skipping crucial safety checks on the gas-burning appliance in your home. For the sake of both reliability and safety, servicing both components is essential.
Think of it like owning a car; you would not only change the oil but refuse to check the tires or brakes. Both are critical for the vehicle’s overall performance and safety. A dual fuel system requires the same holistic approach. To get the energy savings, comfort, and reliability you invested in, you must maintain the complete system. Our dual fuel maintenance plan is designed to make this comprehensive care simple and affordable. It is the correct way to protect your advanced HVAC system.
Yes, a maintenance plan for a dual fuel system is an exceptionally worthwhile investment. In fact, it offers even more value than a plan for a standard system. Because a dual fuel system requires two service visits per year, the cost of a maintenance plan is often significantly lower than paying for two separate service calls. The plan provides a predictable, manageable cost for your annual upkeep. It is the most affordable way to ensure your system receives the professional care it needs. The financial savings on the service calls alone make the plan a smart choice.
The benefits of a maintenance plan extend far beyond the initial cost savings. The regular tune-ups ensure that both your heat pump and your furnace are running at peak efficiency. This translates directly into lower electricity bills in the summer and lower gas bills in the winter. The plan also includes valuable perks like priority service, which moves you to the front of the line for any repair needs. You may also receive discounts on any necessary parts or repairs. These combined benefits provide an excellent return on your investment in the plan.
Ultimately, a maintenance plan provides peace of mind. You never have to worry about forgetting to schedule a tune-up, as we contact you to book your appointments. You can rest assured that your complex system is being cared for by experts who understand its unique needs. You are also protecting yourself from the high cost and stress of unexpected breakdowns. For a relatively small annual fee, you are protecting a very large investment in your home’s comfort. Most homeowners find this security and value to be well worth the cost.
Regular maintenance has a profound impact on the efficiency of both components of your dual fuel system. For the electric heat pump, the most important maintenance task for efficiency is cleaning the coils. When the indoor and outdoor coils are clean, the system can transfer heat easily. This allows it to cool your home using less energy. A system with dirty coils can see its efficiency drop by 15 percent or more. Verifying the correct refrigerant charge also ensures the heat pump operates at its designated efficiency rating. These steps directly lower your spring, summer, and fall electricity bills.
For the gas furnace component, maintenance ensures you get the most heat out of every unit of fuel you purchase. A technician will clean the furnace burners, which allows for a cleaner, hotter, and more efficient flame. We will also adjust the gas pressure to the manufacturer’s specifications for optimal combustion. A clean blower motor ensures that all the heat produced by the furnace is effectively delivered to your home without restriction. A furnace that is running efficiently will have shorter run cycles, which directly translates into lower natural gas or propane consumption during the winter.
By maintaining both parts, you ensure the entire system works as a cohesive, efficient unit. An efficient system allows the smart thermostat to make the best decisions about which fuel source to use. If the heat pump is running inefficiently due to neglect, the system may switch to the more expensive furnace too early. Conversely, a poorly maintained furnace might not be able to keep up in deep winter. Professional maintenance keeps both options running at their best. This guarantees you are always using the most economical fuel source as effectively as possible.
Yes, checking the settings related to the balance point is a key part of our dual fuel maintenance service. While the balance point temperature itself may not need to be changed every year, we verify the components that control it. The most important of these is the outdoor temperature sensor. Our technician will test this sensor to ensure it is reading the outdoor temperature accurately. An inaccurate sensor could cause the system to switch from heat pump to furnace at the wrong time, which would waste energy. We confirm the sensor is clean and communicating properly with the thermostat.
During the service, the technician will also review the balance point setting programmed into the thermostat. We do this to ensure it has not been accidentally changed or corrupted. We can also discuss the setting with you. If there have been dramatic changes in local utility rates for either electricity or gas, it may be beneficial to adjust the balance point slightly. Our technician can advise you if an adjustment would be advantageous for saving money. It is part of our commitment to ensuring your system is perfectly optimized for your specific situation.
Ultimately, our goal is to confirm that the automatic switchover function is working exactly as intended. We can run the system through a test cycle to verify that the thermostat correctly deactivates the heat pump and activates the furnace when the temperature drops below the setpoint. This test provides absolute confirmation that the brain of your system is making the right decisions. This verification is a unique and essential part of a true dual fuel maintenance service. It provides peace of mind that your system is maximizing your savings.
Each of the two annual maintenance appointments for a dual fuel system will typically take between 60 and 90 minutes. The spring visit to service the heat pump is very similar in duration to a standard air conditioning tune-up. Likewise, the fall visit to service the gas furnace is comparable in length to a standard furnace tune-up. This timeframe allows our technicians to be extremely thorough. They can complete every item on our detailed maintenance checklist without rushing through crucial safety checks or cleaning procedures. We respect your time and always strive to complete the work efficiently.
The specific duration of each visit can vary slightly based on a few factors. The age, condition, and cleanliness of the equipment can play a role. A unit that has been regularly maintained will often be quicker to service than one that has been neglected. The physical location and accessibility of the indoor and outdoor units can also impact the timeline. For instance, a furnace located in a tight crawlspace may require more time to service safely than one in an open basement. Our technician will always communicate with you if they expect the service to take longer than the standard window.
While we work efficiently, our primary focus is always on quality and thoroughness. The safety inspections and performance tests we conduct are vital for the reliable operation of your system. We will never compromise the quality of our work just to save a few minutes. You can be confident that our technicians will dedicate the necessary amount of time to do the job correctly. Our commitment is to provide a high-value service that protects your equipment and ensures your comfort. This meticulous approach is what prevents future breakdowns.
Skipping dual fuel maintenance exposes you to risks in both the summer and the winter. By neglecting the heat pump, you will face decreased cooling efficiency and higher electricity bills. More importantly, you dramatically increase the likelihood of a system breakdown during a summer heatwave. By neglecting the furnace, you increase the risk of it failing to start on the coldest night of the year. This means you risk being without a primary heat source when you need it most. The reliability of your entire year-round comfort system is compromised when you skip service.
One of the most serious risks involves the safety of the gas furnace. Our fall maintenance includes a thorough inspection of the heat exchanger for cracks and a check for carbon monoxide leaks. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can be deadly. A cracked heat exchanger can allow CO to enter your home’s airstream. Skipping the furnace tune-up means you are also skipping these essential safety checks. This is a significant and unnecessary risk to the health and safety of your family. The safety inspections alone are worth the cost of the service.
Financially, skipping maintenance is a very poor decision. You will pay more in monthly utility bills due to lost efficiency on both your gas and electric systems. You are also much more likely to face expensive, unexpected repair bills. Furthermore, nearly all manufacturers state in their warranty terms that damage caused by a lack of regular maintenance is not covered. By skipping service, you could be forced to pay the full cost for a major component failure that otherwise would have been covered. The risks to your comfort, safety, and finances are simply too great to ignore.
