We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

I had these guys install a new American Standard 3 ton heat pump this week. I got quotes from different companies and after a great deal of research chose SWVA Mechanical. Nick and Brian explained everything in detail and Jesse and Sam did our install. We are very happy with the entire process. Nick asked me a number of times during and after the install if we were happy and everything was to our expectations. They really care about customer satisfaction and it shows. Great product and install! I would highly recommend this company to anyone on the market for a new system. Great price and great product!

Generac Generator Maintenance Service

To ensure your generator is always ready for an outage, Generac strongly recommends a complete professional tune-up once every year. This annual service is also a requirement for maintaining your factory warranty coverage. A standby generator sits idle most of its life, but it must function flawlessly when called upon. Our maintenance service is a comprehensive, multi-point inspection and tune-up of the entire system. Our technicians address every aspect of the generator’s health, from its engine to its electronic controls. This preventative care is the key to long-term reliability and performance. We make sure your generator is ready to protect your home or business.

One of the most essential tasks in our service is a complete engine oil and filter change. The oil inside your generator’s engine breaks down over time, losing its ability to properly lubricate and protect internal parts. Our technician will fully drain the old oil from the engine. We then refill it with the exact type and amount of high-quality synthetic oil specified by Generac. The old oil filter is also removed and replaced with a new, genuine OEM Generac filter. This vital service is fundamental to the long-term health and durability of the engine. It is the core of any professional tune-up.

The starting battery is the most common reason a standby generator fails to operate during a power outage. Our maintenance visit therefore includes a thorough inspection of the entire battery system. The technician will use a professional tester to check the battery’s voltage and overall health. This ensures it can hold a strong charge and deliver the power needed to start the engine. We will clean the battery posts and terminals to remove any corrosion. We also tighten the cable connections to guarantee a solid path for electricity. A healthy battery is critical for reliable starting.

A generator’s engine needs clean air and a strong spark to run efficiently. Our maintenance service includes a full inspection of the air intake and ignition systems. The technician will remove and inspect the engine’s air filter, which traps dust and debris. We will replace the filter with a new OEM Generac part to ensure proper airflow for clean combustion. The engine’s spark plugs are also removed, inspected for wear, and replaced as needed. New spark plugs provide a strong, consistent spark for reliable starting and smooth engine operation.

A clean and uninterrupted fuel supply is vital for your generator to run during an extended outage. Our technicians will perform a careful inspection of the fuel system from the connection point to the generator itself. We check the flexible fuel line for any signs of cracking or aging. The fuel regulator is inspected to ensure it is functioning correctly. We also check all fittings and connections to ensure they are tight and leak-free. This inspection guarantees your generator has the safe and stable fuel source it needs to perform its job.

Our service includes a general cleaning and detailed visual inspection of the entire generator unit. The technician will clean the interior and exterior of the generator’s enclosure. We will remove any leaves, grass clippings, or animal nests that could obstruct airflow and cause overheating. While cleaning, we perform a meticulous visual inspection of all visible components. We look for any worn belts, cracked hoses, or frayed wires. This careful inspection can often identify a small, developing issue before it becomes a major cause of failure.

The maintenance visit concludes with a full operational systems test. The technician will manually start the generator and allow it to run for a test period. During this test, we use a multimeter to check the generator’s output. We verify that it is producing clean and stable electricity at the correct voltage and frequency. We will also test the generator’s communication with the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS). This final check confirms that your entire backup power system is healthy, calibrated, and ready for duty.

Emergency Generac Generator Maintenance Near You

Your Generac generator is designed to monitor its own health and will alert you to a problem with a status light. A yellow light indicates a non-critical issue or that maintenance is due, while a red light signals a critical fault. For our maintenance plan customers, we offer priority service for these generator alarms. If you see a yellow or red fault light, your service call will be moved to the top of our queue. This ensures a technician can diagnose and fix the issue promptly, returning your generator to its ready state before the next outage occurs.

Most Common Generac Generator Maintenance Questions

Your standby generator is a significant investment in your property’s safety and security. Understanding the maintenance it needs is key to its reliability. We have answered some of the most common questions our Lebanon customers ask about Generac generator maintenance.

Generac’s official recommendation for standby generators is that they receive professional service once every year or after every 200 hours of use, whichever comes first. Since most standby generators run for only a few hours a year during actual outages, this almost always translates to a simple annual service schedule. A full professional tune-up once every twelve months is the industry standard to ensure the engine and all its components remain in top condition. This is the schedule you should follow to guarantee reliability.

This yearly service is crucial because key components can degrade over time, even when the generator is not running. The engine oil loses its protective qualities. The starting battery can slowly lose its charge. Rubber hoses and belts can become brittle with age. An annual service visit from a certified technician allows for the replacement of these items and a full inspection of the entire system. This proactive approach is the best way to ensure the generator will work perfectly when an emergency strikes.

Think of your generator’s maintenance schedule like that of your car. Even if you do not drive your car often, you still need to change the oil and have it inspected on a yearly basis to keep it reliable. Your generator’s engine requires this same level of professional care. A consistent annual maintenance plan is the most effective way to protect your investment and ensure it is ready to perform its critical job.

Some homeowners with strong mechanical skills may choose to perform basic maintenance tasks like changing the oil and filters themselves. Generac makes maintenance kits available for this purpose. However, for the vast majority of owners, we strongly recommend using a certified service technician for the annual maintenance. A professional service is much more comprehensive than just an oil change. Our technicians follow a multi-point checklist that includes technical tests and inspections that a homeowner is not equipped to perform.

For example, a certified technician will use professional equipment to test the health and cranking power of the starting battery. We will also check the engine’s valve clearance and use a multimeter to verify the generator’s voltage and frequency output. We can also test the proper function of the Automatic Transfer Switch. These are critical checks that go beyond the scope of a basic DIY service. Proper documentation of professional service is also important for your warranty.

While you can and should perform monthly visual inspections, check the oil level, and keep the exterior of the unit clean, the full annual service is a job for an expert. Using a professional service provider like SWVA Mechanical ensures the job is done with the correct, genuine parts and according to manufacturer specifications. This provides a clear service history and the highest level of confidence that your system is truly ready for an emergency.

The weekly exercise cycle is a vital, automated feature of your Generac generator, but it is not a substitute for annual maintenance. The exercise cycle is a brief self-test where the generator automatically starts and runs for about ten minutes each week. The primary purpose of this test is to circulate oil throughout the engine to keep all the internal parts lubricated. It also helps to keep the starting battery charged and prevents moisture from building up in the engine. This weekly test greatly enhances the generator’s reliability.

However, the exercise cycle performs no actual maintenance on the unit. It does not change the engine’s old oil, nor does it replace the dirty air filter or worn spark plugs. It is simply a way for the system to verify that it can start. You can think of it as turning on your car’s engine once a week to make sure the battery is still good. It does not replace the need for a regular oil change, a new set of tires, or a brake inspection.

Therefore, you must not rely on the exercise cycle alone to care for your generator. It is an important readiness feature, but it must be paired with a comprehensive annual maintenance service. The annual service is when the hands-on work of replacing fluids and filters and performing detailed inspections takes place. Both the weekly exercise and the annual service are required for a truly dependable backup power system.

The starting battery is the single most critical component for your generator’s reliability. A standby generator’s engine uses an electric starter, just like a car. This starter requires a powerful burst of energy from the battery to crank the engine and get it running. If the battery is weak, has a corroded connection, or has failed, the generator will not be able to start. A power outage will occur, the transfer switch will signal the generator, and nothing will happen. The number one reason a well-maintained generator fails to start is a bad battery.

A generator’s battery is susceptible to several issues. Like all lead-acid batteries, they have a finite lifespan, typically lasting about three to four years before they need to be replaced. Their terminals can develop corrosion, which prevents electricity from flowing effectively. Although the generator charges the battery when it runs, a long period of inactivity or a missed exercise cycle could allow the battery to slowly drain. This is why the battery requires regular, professional attention.

During our annual maintenance visit, the battery system is a primary focus. We use a professional digital tester to analyze the battery’s health and its ability to deliver its rated cranking amps. We disconnect the terminals and meticulously clean them and the battery posts to ensure a perfect connection. If our tests show the battery is getting weak or approaching the end of its life, we will recommend replacing it proactively. This preventative step is the best way to ensure your generator starts on command.

Skipping your annual generator maintenance is a significant risk that can lead to several negative outcomes. The most immediate and serious consequence is that your generator may fail to start during the next power outage. An engine with old, broken-down oil, fouled spark plugs, or a weak battery is simply not reliable. You will have a major investment sitting outside your property that provides no protection when you and your family actually need it. This is the most common result of neglect.

Another major risk of skipping maintenance is voiding your manufacturer’s warranty. Generac provides a limited warranty to cover defects in parts and manufacturing. However, this warranty requires that the owner performs regular maintenance as specified in the owner’s manual. If you have to make a claim for a major engine failure, Generac will likely require you to provide service records from a qualified technician. Without these records, your claim could be denied, leaving you to pay the full cost of a very expensive repair.

Finally, a lack of regular maintenance will undoubtedly shorten the lifespan of your generator. An engine is a complex piece of machinery. Running it with dirty oil, a clogged air filter, and without regular inspections will cause excessive wear and tear on all its internal components. Belts and hoses that are not inspected can fail and cause significant damage. Investing in a simple annual service ensures that your generator will not only be reliable today, but that it will also last for its full expected service life.

Yes, to ensure your warranty coverage remains intact, you must perform regular maintenance as outlined by Generac in your owner’s manual. The manufacturer’s warranty is designed to protect you from defects in the product’s materials and workmanship. It is not intended to cover failures that result from owner neglect or a lack of proper care. In the event of a major warranty claim, the manufacturer has the right to ask for proof that the unit has been maintained according to their recommended schedule. This is a standard practice for any product with an engine.

Using a certified service provider like SWVA Mechanical is the best way to ensure you are compliant with these warranty requirements. After every maintenance visit, we provide you with a detailed service report that outlines all the work that was performed. This report serves as your official documentation and proof of maintenance. This creates a clear and professional service history for your generator, which can be invaluable if you ever need to file a warranty claim. It removes any doubt that the unit was cared for correctly.

While the warranty may not explicitly forbid you from doing the work yourself, a professional service record from a certified dealer carries much more weight. It demonstrates that the work was done correctly, at the proper interval, and using genuine OEM parts and fluids. Protecting your warranty is one of the most important financial reasons to invest in a professional annual maintenance plan for your generator.

A standard annual maintenance service for a typical residential Generac generator is a very efficient process. Our technicians are factory-trained and have a streamlined process for completing the comprehensive multi-point inspection. You can expect a standard maintenance visit to take approximately 60 to 90 minutes. This provides our technician with ample time to perform all the required tasks thoroughly and without rushing. This includes the full oil and filter change, battery service, spark plug and air filter replacement, and the final operational test.

The service may take slightly longer if the technician discovers a minor issue that needs to be addressed. For example, if a fuel line fitting needs to be tightened or a battery cable end needs to be replaced, we will take the extra time to perform that small repair during the visit. Our goal is to leave your generator in a 100% ready state. We will always communicate with you if the service is expected to take longer than the typical 90-minute window.

We strive to make the maintenance process as convenient as possible for our customers. We schedule our service calls in clear appointment windows, and our technicians will arrive prepared with all the necessary Generac parts, filters, and oil to complete the job efficiently. We respect your time and work to complete our service with minimal disruption to your day. Our goal is to make professional generator maintenance a simple and easy annual task for you.

The indicator lights on the side of your Generac generator provide a simple, at-a-glance status report on your system’s health. There are typically three colored lights: green, yellow, and red. A solid green light is the one you want to see. This indicates that the system is functioning normally, utility power is present, and the generator is ready to run automatically when the next outage occurs. The green light means all systems are go. You can have confidence that your system is standing by correctly.

A solid yellow light is an advisory indicator. It is not a critical fault, and your generator will still run if there is an outage. The yellow light most often means that the generator’s internal controller is indicating that it is time for its routine scheduled maintenance. It is a simple reminder to call and schedule your annual service. In some cases, it can also indicate a minor, non-critical fault, such as a low battery, which should be addressed soon.

A solid red light indicates a critical fault has occurred. When you see a red light, it means your generator is not able to run. The system has detected a problem that would prevent it from starting or operating safely, and it has locked itself out. This could be due to a range of issues, from a dead battery to a serious engine problem. If you see a red light, your home or business is not protected, and you should call for service immediately. A technician can diagnose the specific fault code that caused the red light.
