Honest Reviews From Our Clients
Homeowners across Southwest Virginia trust SWVA Mechanical for HVAC services that are done right the first time. Here’s what real customers have to say about their experience:

We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

Called with HVAC issue on Monday had a resolution by Tuesday morning. Owner Nick is amazing. Goes above and beyond for his customers. Technician that came out was 5 star! Polite, conscientious regarding cleanliness, and super helpful. Pricing is extremely reasonable. I will never use another company!

Nick Cross and his team are amazing. Did a great job for us. They are polite, professional and knowledgable. Our challenge is with a house built in 1913 and their work has given us more control over our HVAC system and made our living space more comfortable. Price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.

Samuel came out and did a great job!! He serviced my unit inside and outside. Company was amazing to begin with. Answered and returned my calls every time. They were prompt in letting me know when they would arrive and informed me of all repairs before doing anything. Amazing job!! Highly recommended.

Highly Recommend! Brian and his team done an outstanding job installing my new Mitsubishi mini splits. I couldn’t have asked for a better HVAC Team than SWVA Mechanicals!

I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Mini Split Installation Service
Understanding the design of a ductless mini-split system reveals its flexibility and simplicity. The system consists of two main types of components. There is a single outdoor condenser unit and one or more indoor air-handling units, often called “heads.” These two parts are connected by a small conduit that contains the refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and a condensate drain line. This small bundle only requires a three-inch hole through an exterior wall for installation. This avoids the costly and invasive process of installing bulky ductwork. It is a minimally intrusive way to get powerful heating and cooling.
One of the greatest benefits of a mini-split system is the ability to create customized comfort zones. A single outdoor unit can often support up to eight individual indoor air handlers. Each indoor head can be controlled independently and has its own thermostat. This allows you to set different temperatures in different rooms or “zones” of your house. You can have your bedroom cooler at night while leaving the rest of the house at a more moderate temperature. This zoned approach stops you from wasting energy and money heating or cooling rooms that you are not using. It is a smarter way to manage your home’s comfort.
The ductless nature of mini-split systems makes them ideal for a wide range of applications. They are the perfect solution for providing heating and cooling to new home additions or converted spaces like garages and sunrooms. They are also an excellent choice for older homes built without existing ductwork, providing a modern comfort solution without major renovations. Mini-splits can also be used to supplement an existing central HVAC system. If you have a specific room that is always too hot or too cold, a single-zone mini-split can solve the problem efficiently and effectively.
Our installation process starts with a detailed consultation and a professional sizing calculation. Unlike central systems that are sized for a whole house, mini-splits are sized on a room-by-room basis. Our technicians will perform a detailed load calculation for each room or “zone” where you want an indoor unit. This ensures that each indoor head has the correct BTU capacity to properly heat and cool that specific space. We will also ensure the outdoor unit has the capacity to support all the connected indoor units. Proper sizing is the key to both comfort and efficiency.
The installation of the indoor units is a clean and precise process. The most common type of indoor head is a high-wall unit, which our technician will securely mount on an interior wall. Once the ideal placement is determined, we will drill a small hole, typically about three inches in diameter, through the wall directly behind the unit. This small opening is all that is needed for the line set conduit to pass through to the outside. This hole is completely concealed by the indoor unit once it is mounted. We take great care to be neat and protect your home during this process.
Once the indoor heads are mounted, our technician will install the outdoor condenser unit. This unit is placed on a stable, level pad in an appropriate location outside your home. We then run the conduit containing the line sets from each indoor unit and connect them to the outdoor condenser. The electrical wiring is safely connected to provide power to the entire system. Each indoor unit also has a condensate drain line that must be routed to properly dispose of moisture. Every connection is made with precision to ensure a leak-proof and reliable system.
The final step of the installation is to commission the system for operation. Our technicians will pressure test the lines to check for leaks. Then, we use a vacuum pump to remove all air and moisture from the refrigerant lines. Once a deep vacuum is achieved, we release the precise amount of refrigerant into the system. We will then test each indoor unit, or zone, in both heating and cooling modes. Our technician will also show you how to use the remote control for each unit and explain all of its features.

Most Common Mini Split Installation Questions
Ductless mini-split systems are a flexible and highly efficient technology. Because they are different from traditional central systems, homeowners often have questions. We have answered some of the most common questions about mini-split installation below.
One of the biggest advantages of a mini-split system is its incredible energy efficiency. Because there is no ductwork, these systems do not suffer from the energy losses associated with central forced-air systems. Duct losses can account for more than 30% of energy consumption for space conditioning. This makes mini-splits significantly more efficient. Many models also have very high SEER and HSPF ratings and use variable-speed compressors. This means they use less electricity to heat and cool your home, resulting in lower utility bills every month.
Another major advantage is the ability to have zoned comfort. With a central system, you have one thermostat that controls the temperature of the entire house. A multi-zone mini-split system allows you to have individual temperature control for different rooms. You can keep your living room comfortable during the day and your bedrooms cooler. This ability to heat or cool only the areas you are using prevents wasted energy. It provides a level of customized comfort that is impossible to achieve with a standard central system.
Finally, mini-splits offer unmatched installation flexibility. Because they do not require any ductwork, they can be installed in almost any space. They are a perfect solution for older homes that were built without ducts. They are also ideal for new additions, converted garages, or basements where extending existing ductwork would be difficult and expensive. The installation process is much less invasive than a traditional system. This flexibility makes them an incredibly versatile problem solver for a wide variety of heating and cooling challenges.
The number of indoor units that a single outdoor unit can support depends entirely on the capacity of the outdoor unit. Mini-split systems are available in a wide range of configurations. The simplest setup is a single-zone system. This consists of one outdoor unit connected to one indoor head. These are perfect for conditioning a single space, like a sunroom or a master bedroom. However, the true flexibility of mini-splits is realized with multi-zone systems. These systems are designed to heat and cool multiple rooms independently.
Most residential multi-zone outdoor units are designed to support anywhere from two to five indoor units. This allows you to create several different comfort zones throughout your home. For example, you could have one indoor unit in your living room and one in each of your bedrooms. Some larger, more powerful outdoor units can support up to eight or even nine indoor heads. This makes it possible to provide zoned, ductless comfort for an entire house. Our technicians can help you design a system that fits your specific needs.
It is important to size the outdoor unit correctly based on the total capacity of the indoor units it will support. The outdoor unit must have enough power to run all the indoor heads simultaneously if needed. However, you do not want a unit that is excessively oversized, as this can be inefficient. Our professional load calculation and design process ensures that your multi-zone system is perfectly balanced for optimal performance and efficiency. We match the outdoor unit to your specific combination of indoor units.
No, that is a common misconception about mini-split systems. While they provide excellent, high-efficiency air conditioning, virtually all mini-splits sold today are also heat pumps. This means they can provide both cooling in the summer and effective heating in the winter. They work by reversing their cycle, absorbing heat from the outside air and moving it into your home. This process is far more efficient than traditional electric resistance heating, which makes them a great choice for lowering your winter heating bills.
Modern mini-split heat pumps are particularly effective at heating, even in cold climates. Many high-end models feature advanced technology that allows them to produce heat even when the outdoor temperature drops to 5 degrees Fahrenheit or even lower. This makes them a viable primary heat source for many homes in the Lebanon area. They provide consistent, comfortable heat without the need for burning fuel inside your home. They are an all-in-one comfort solution for every season.
Because they are heat pumps, a mini-split can replace both your window air conditioner and your inefficient space heaters. You get a single, safe, and highly efficient system to manage your comfort year-round. This versatility is one of the main reasons they have become so popular. They offer a complete heating and cooling solution in one sleek and quiet package. You can be confident that a new mini-split system will keep you comfortable in both July and January.
A mini-split installation is significantly less invasive and messy than installing a traditional central HVAC system. The primary reason for this is the lack of ductwork. Installing a full duct system involves cutting large holes in walls, floors, and ceilings. This can create a significant amount of dust and disruption in your home. A mini-split system avoids all of this. The entire installation process is much cleaner and is typically confined to the specific rooms where the units are being placed.
The most significant part of the installation that involves cutting is drilling a small hole through your exterior wall. This hole is typically only about three inches in diameter. It is just large enough for the refrigerant lines, electrical wiring, and condensate drain to pass through. Our technicians use specialized tools to drill a clean hole, and we take care to seal it properly against air and moisture leaks. This small hole is completely hidden from view behind the indoor unit, so you will never see it.
Our professional installers at SWVA Mechanical take great pride in protecting your home during the installation process. We use drop cloths to cover your floors and furniture to keep them clean. We work carefully and methodically to minimize any disruption. When the installation is complete, we will thoroughly clean our work area. Our goal is to leave your home as clean as we found it, with the only evidence of our visit being your new, fully functional mini-split system.
Mini-split systems offer several convenient ways to control your comfort. The most common method of control is a handheld wireless remote. Each indoor unit, or zone, comes with its own dedicated remote control. This remote allows you to turn the unit on and off, set the desired temperature, change the mode from heating to cooling, and adjust the fan speed and airflow direction. This gives you precise control over the comfort of that specific room right from the palm of your hand. It is a simple and intuitive way to manage your system.
Many modern mini-split systems also offer the option of a wall-mounted thermostat. These thermostats can be either wired or wireless and function much like a traditional central thermostat. They provide a stationary, centralized control point for a specific zone. This can be a convenient option for main living areas. Some advanced wall-mounted controls can even manage multiple indoor units from a single interface. This provides a more integrated control experience for multi-zone systems.
The latest generation of mini-splits also features built-in Wi-Fi connectivity. This allows you to control your entire system from a smartphone, tablet, or computer. By downloading the manufacturer’s app, you can adjust temperatures, set schedules, and monitor energy usage from anywhere in the world. This provides the ultimate in convenience and control. Whether you prefer a simple remote, a classic wall thermostat, or a high-tech app, there is a control option to suit your lifestyle.
The cost of a mini-split system depends heavily on the size and type of system you choose. For a single-zone system designed to heat and cool one room, the upfront cost can be more expensive than a high-end window AC unit. However, it is typically less expensive than installing a brand new central air conditioning system. The mini-split will also be significantly more energy-efficient than a window unit, which will save you money on your utility bills over time. It is a long-term investment in better comfort and efficiency.
For a multi-zone system designed to heat and cool several rooms or an entire house, the cost can be comparable to installing a new central HVAC system. While the equipment cost may be higher, you save money by not having to install any ductwork. This can make it a very cost-effective choice for homes without existing ducts. Even if the initial cost is similar, a multi-zone mini-split system will provide much lower operating costs due to its high efficiency and zoning capabilities.
It is also important to consider that many high-efficiency mini-split systems qualify for local and federal energy rebates. These rebates can significantly reduce the net cost of the installation. Our team at SWVA Mechanical can help you identify any available rebates for the systems we offer. We will provide you with a detailed, upfront estimate so you can fully understand the investment. We believe in providing transparent pricing to help you make the best decision for your budget.
Mini-split systems offer incredible flexibility when it comes to the placement of the indoor units. The most common and often most cost-effective style of indoor unit is the high-wall head. These units are mounted high on an interior wall, typically about six to eight inches below the ceiling. This placement allows for excellent air distribution throughout the room. They are sleek and modern in appearance and are designed to blend in with your home’s decor. Our technicians can help you determine the best wall placement for optimal airflow.
While high-wall units are the most popular, manufacturers offer several other styles to suit different needs and aesthetic preferences. For rooms with limited upper wall space or sloped ceilings, a floor-mounted console is an excellent option. These units are installed at the base of a wall and look similar to a traditional radiator, but are much more compact. For homeowners who want the unit to be completely hidden, there are other choices available. Ceiling cassettes are designed to be recessed into the ceiling, leaving only a discreet grille visible.
There are also concealed duct units, sometimes called “slim duct” units. These small air handlers can be installed completely out of sight, such as in a ceiling void or a closet. They then use a short run of small, flexible ductwork to deliver air to the room through a conventional-looking vent. This option provides the efficiency of a mini-split with the look of a central air system. This variety of styles means there is an indoor unit solution for almost any room configuration or design preference.
The time required for a mini-split installation depends on the number of indoor units being installed. A simple, single-zone installation is a relatively quick process. A straightforward project with one indoor head and one outdoor unit can often be completed by our skilled technicians in about four to six hours. This means we can often have your new system up and running in less than a full day. It is a very efficient installation process compared to most other HVAC systems.
For a more complex multi-zone system, the installation will naturally take longer. The total time will depend on the number of indoor units we are installing. A two or three-zone system can typically be completed in a full workday, roughly eight to ten hours. A larger system with four or more indoor heads may take between one and two full days to complete. The extra time is needed to mount each indoor unit, run the individual line sets, and make all the necessary connections at the outdoor unit.
Our team at SWVA Mechanical always prioritizes the quality and precision of our work. We will provide you with a clear and realistic timeline for your specific project during our initial consultation. We work diligently to complete the installation as quickly as possible while ensuring every step is done correctly. Our goal is to minimize the disruption to your home and provide you with a perfectly installed system that will last for many years.
