We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Mini Split Repair Service

The diagnostic process for a mini-split system requires a detailed and methodical approach. Our technicians begin by identifying the symptoms and checking for any error codes displayed by the unit. These codes often point us directly to the source of the problem. For multi-zone systems, we first determine if the issue is affecting a single indoor head or the entire system. We will then test the electrical and refrigerant systems, as well as the critical communication wiring between the indoor and outdoor units. This specialized diagnostic process allows us to pinpoint the exact failure with precision.

One of the most common repair calls we receive for mini-splits is an indoor unit that is leaking water. This issue is almost always caused by a clog in the system’s condensate drain line. As the unit cools and dehumidifies the air, it creates condensation that is meant to drain outside. Over time, this drain line can become blocked with dust, slime, and algae. When the line is clogged, the water has nowhere to go and will back up into the indoor unit, eventually overflowing and leaking onto your wall. Our technicians can quickly and cleanly flush the drain line to resolve this common problem.

If your mini-split is not heating or cooling effectively, there could be several potential causes. A gradual loss of performance is often a sign of a refrigerant leak. An indoor unit that is very dirty with a clogged filter and blower wheel will also suffer from poor performance. If the unit stops working suddenly, the problem could be a failed compressor or fan motor in the outdoor unit. For heating issues in the winter, a bad reversing valve could also be the culprit. Our technicians can test each of these components to find the source of the poor performance.

A mini-split that will not turn on at all can be a frustrating problem. The issue could be as simple as dead batteries in the remote control. You should always try replacing the batteries first. If that does not work, the problem could be a failed control board inside the indoor unit. A loose wiring connection or a lack of power to the outdoor unit can also prevent the system from starting. Our technicians will trace the path of power and control signals from the remote to the outdoor unit to find the exact point of failure.

Modern mini-split systems rely on constant communication between the indoor and outdoor units. A dedicated communication wire runs between the two components as part of the line set. If this wire becomes damaged, disconnected, or if one of the main circuit boards fails, a communication error will occur. This will cause the system to shut down and usually results in a flashing light on the indoor unit. Diagnosing these errors requires testing the wiring for continuity and checking the control boards for proper function. This is a common issue that requires a trained technician.

While a musty odor from a mini-split usually just means it needs cleaning, a sudden mechanical noise indicates a repair is needed. A loud grinding, squealing, or rattling sound is not normal. This type of noise usually points to a failing fan motor. This could be the motor for the large fan in the outdoor unit or the cylindrical blower wheel inside one of your indoor heads. It is important to turn the system off if you hear these noises. Continuing to run it can cause the motor to seize up completely.

We are committed to providing a transparent and honest repair service for your ductless system. After our technician performs a complete diagnosis, they will take the time to explain the problem to you. We will show you the faulty part and describe the repair that is needed to fix it. You will always receive a clear, upfront price for the job before we get started. This ensures you can approve the repair with full knowledge of the cost. There will be no hidden fees or surprises on your final bill.

Most Common Mini Split Repair Questions

Ductless mini-splits are reliable, but like any mechanical system, they can experience problems. When your system fails, you likely have urgent questions. We have answered some of the most common questions our Lebanon customers ask about mini-split repairs.

An indoor mini-split unit leaking water is one of the most common problems homeowners face. In the vast majority of cases, this leak is caused by a clogged condensate drain line. During the summer cooling season, your mini-split removes a significant amount of humidity from the air. This moisture condenses into water on the cold indoor coil. The water collects in a drain pan and is supposed to flow outside through a small drain tube. This constant presence of water creates an ideal environment for slime and algae to grow.

Over time, this biological growth can create a clog inside the narrow drain line. When the line is clogged, the condensation has nowhere to go. The drain pan inside the unit will fill up and eventually overflow. This causes water to drip out of the front of the unit and often run down the wall. While it can look alarming, this is typically not a sign of a major component failure. It is a very common issue that can be resolved with a professional service call.

To fix the leak, a technician will need to clear the clog from the drain line. We use specialized tools, such as a small vacuum pump or pressurized nitrogen, to safely and effectively flush the blockage out of the tube. Once the line is clear, the water will be able to drain properly again, and the leak will stop. As part of the service, we can also apply a treatment to the drain pan to help inhibit future algae growth.

If your mini-split remote control suddenly stops working, there are a few simple troubleshooting steps you can take. The first and most obvious step is to replace the batteries. Dead or weak batteries are the number one reason for a remote to stop functioning. Be sure to use a fresh set of the correct type of batteries. After replacing them, try to operate the unit again. Also, make sure that there is a clear line of sight between the remote and the indoor unit. Obstructions can sometimes block the infrared signal.

If new batteries do not solve the problem, the issue could be with either the remote itself or the receiver on the indoor unit. You can try to test the remote by pointing it at the camera on your smartphone. When you press a button on the remote, you should be able to see the infrared emitter flash on your phone’s screen. If you do not see a flash, the remote itself has likely failed and will need to be replaced.

If you can see the remote flashing on your camera, but the unit still does not respond, then the problem is likely with the unit itself. The infrared receiver on the indoor unit may have failed, or there could be an issue with the main control board that processes the signal. In this case, you will need a professional technician to diagnose the problem. They can test the components and determine if the receiver or the control board needs to be replaced.

A flashing light on your indoor mini-split unit is a signal that the system has detected a problem. It is an error code that is designed to help a technician diagnose the issue more quickly. Different models use different patterns of flashing lights, but it almost always indicates a specific fault. The system is essentially telling you what is wrong. It could be signaling anything from a minor sensor issue to a major component failure. It is important not to ignore these flashing lights, as they are a clear sign your system needs attention.

The meaning of the flashing light can vary greatly between brands and models. For example, a certain number of flashes might indicate a communication error between the indoor and outdoor units. A different pattern could mean a problem with a temperature sensor, a fan motor, or the main control board. Your user manual may have a basic guide to some of these error codes. However, interpreting them correctly and diagnosing the underlying cause often requires professional expertise and diagnostic tools.

When you call for service, be sure to tell our dispatcher what the flashing light pattern looks like. This information can be very helpful for the technician. It gives them a head start on the diagnosis before they even arrive at your home. A technician can use the error code to consult the technical service manual for your specific unit. This allows them to quickly identify the potential causes and test the correct components, leading to a faster and more accurate repair.

The cost of a mini-split repair depends entirely on the nature of the problem. Some of the most common repairs are quite affordable. For example, clearing a clogged condensate drain line to fix a water leak is a relatively low-cost service call. Likewise, replacing the batteries in a remote or even replacing the remote control itself is not a major expense. These simple fixes can often resolve common issues without breaking the budget. Many repairs fall into this more affordable category.

The cost increases for more significant parts and labor. Replacing a failed fan motor in either the indoor or outdoor unit is a moderately expensive repair. The same is true for replacing a primary control board, which is a key electronic component. These parts are more costly, and the labor to access and replace them is more involved. Diagnosing and fixing a communication error can also fall into this mid-range, depending on whether it is a simple wiring issue or a failed board.

The most expensive repairs for a mini-split involve the sealed refrigerant system. Replacing a failed compressor, which is the heart of the system, is a very costly job. Finding and repairing a refrigerant leak can also be expensive due to the detailed labor involved. For these major repairs on an older unit, it is often wise to compare the repair cost to the price of a new system. Our technicians will always provide an upfront price so you can make an informed decision.

Yes, a refrigerant leak in a mini-split system can absolutely be fixed. The process requires a certified technician with the right tools and expertise. The first step is to confirm the leak and then to pinpoint its exact location. Technicians use tools like electronic refrigerant “sniffers” and a soap bubble solution to find the source. In mini-split systems, leaks most commonly occur at the flare nut connections where the refrigerant lines connect to the indoor and outdoor units. These connections can sometimes loosen over time due to vibration and temperature changes.

Once the leak is located, the repair can be performed. If the leak is at a flare connection, the fix may be as simple as tightening the nut to the proper torque specification. In other cases, the technician may need to cut off the old flare, create a new one on the copper tubing, and then reconnect it. If the leak is in the copper line itself or in one of the coils, the repair is more complex and may involve brazing the hole shut. After the leak is repaired, the work must be tested.

After the physical repair is made, the job is not yet finished. The technician must use a vacuum pump to remove all air and moisture from the entire system. This is a critical step to ensure the long-term health of the compressor. Once a deep vacuum is achieved, the technician will recharge the system with the precise amount of refrigerant specified by the manufacturer. This entire process ensures a lasting, reliable repair and restores your system’s efficiency.

A communication error is a specific fault that occurs when the indoor unit and the outdoor unit of a mini-split system are unable to “talk” to each other. These units are connected by a communication wire that constantly sends data back and forth. The indoor unit tells the outdoor unit when to turn on, how fast to run the compressor, and what mode to be in. If this communication is lost, the system will shut down as a safety precaution and will typically display a flashing error code on the indoor unit.

This error can be caused by several different issues. The most straightforward cause is a physical break or loose connection in the communication wire itself. This wire runs alongside the refrigerant lines from the outside to the inside. It can sometimes be damaged by animals, landscaping work, or simple corrosion at a connection point. A technician can test the wire for continuity to see if this is the cause of the problem. This is often the first thing they will check for this type of error.

If the wiring is intact, the problem is likely a failure of one of the main electronic control boards. Both the indoor unit and the outdoor unit have their own printed circuit board (PCB) that acts as their brain. If the communication portion of either of these boards fails, it will trigger the error. A technician will have to perform a series of diagnostic tests to determine which board is faulty. Replacing a failed control board is a common repair for a communication error that is not caused by the wiring.

It is sometimes possible to replace a single indoor head in a multi-zone mini-split system, but it can be complicated. The primary requirement is that the new indoor unit must be fully compatible with the existing outdoor unit and the other indoor heads. It is always best to use a new head from the same manufacturer and the same product series as your existing equipment. Different brands, and even different series within the same brand, often use proprietary communication protocols that are not interchangeable. An incompatible head simply will not work.

Even if you find a compatible unit, there can be other challenges. HVAC technology, including refrigerant types and efficiency standards, changes over time. If your system is several years old, the exact model of your indoor unit may no longer be in production. Finding a new unit that is a perfect match can sometimes be difficult or impossible. Trying to mix and match older and newer technologies is generally not recommended as it can lead to performance and reliability issues.

In most cases, if a single indoor head has a major failure like a bad control board or a leaky coil, the best option is to have it repaired. If the unit is very old and cannot be repaired, you should discuss your options with a qualified technician. They can help you determine if a compatible replacement head is available. In some situations, it may be more cost-effective in the long run to consider replacing the entire multi-zone system, especially if it is nearing the end of its service life.

It is extremely important to hire a technician with specific training and certification for mini-split systems. This is because ductless technology is significantly different from traditional central HVAC systems. Mini-splits use inverter-driven, variable-speed compressors, which require a unique diagnostic approach. They also rely on complex electronic controls and communication protocols between the indoor and outdoor units. A technician who only works on standard systems may not have the knowledge to troubleshoot these advanced features correctly. This can lead to a long and frustrating repair process.

An experienced mini-split technician will be familiar with the common failure points and error codes for various brands. They will know to check for issues like clogged drain lines, communication faults, and control board failures. They will also have the specialized tools needed to work on these systems. This includes having the correct gauges for the specific refrigerant type and the knowledge of how to properly weigh in a critical refrigerant charge. An incorrect charge is a common mistake made by inexperienced technicians and can severely damage the system.

By hiring a certified expert, you are ensuring a more accurate diagnosis and a faster, more reliable repair. You are protecting your investment and preventing the risk of an incorrect repair causing further damage. A mini-split is a sophisticated piece of technology. Trusting its repair to someone who specializes in ductless systems is the smartest and safest choice you can make. It ensures the job will be done right the first time.
