We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Ice Maker Repair Service

Our commercial repair service begins with a swift and accurate diagnostic process. We understand that for a business, time is money. Our technician will listen to your staff’s description of the problem and check for any error codes on the machine. We will then perform a systematic evaluation of the unit’s key systems. This includes the water system, the refrigeration system, the harvest mechanism, and the electronic controls. This methodical approach allows us to quickly and accurately identify the root cause of the failure. It is the foundation of an effective and efficient repair.

The most common service call is for a machine that has stopped making ice completely. This failure can be caused by a number of different issues. The problem could be a faulty water inlet valve that is not letting water into the machine. It could also be a failed water pump that is not circulating water over the evaporator plate. In other cases, the mechanical system that harvests the ice may be jammed or broken. A failure in the sealed refrigeration system, such as a bad compressor or fan motor, will also prevent ice from forming. Our technicians can diagnose any of these critical failures.

Poor ice quality is another common problem that often requires a repair. If your machine is producing thin, hollow, or incomplete cubes of ice, it is a sign of a problem. This is often caused by a maintenance issue that has escalated, such as extreme scale buildup on the evaporator plate. It can also be caused by a clogged water distribution tube that is not flowing water evenly over the plate. A refrigeration problem, such as a slow refrigerant leak, can also lead to poor freezing and result in low-quality ice. We can identify the cause and restore your ice quality.

A commercial ice machine that will not power on at all can bring a kitchen to a standstill. Our technicians will begin by testing the electrical supply to the unit. We will check the dedicated circuit breaker and all power switches. If the unit is receiving power, the problem is likely an internal electrical component. This could be a failed transformer, a faulty power switch on the unit, or a complete failure of the main electronic control board. We can safely trace the electrical fault and replace the necessary components to restore power to your machine.

The sealed refrigeration system is the heart of your ice machine, and its repair requires a certified technician. This system includes the compressor, condenser coil, condenser fan motor, and the refrigerant itself. If the condenser fan motor fails, the unit will quickly overheat and shut down. A refrigerant leak will cause a gradual decline in performance until the machine stops freezing altogether. A catastrophic compressor failure will also result in a complete lack of ice production. Our technicians are EPA certified to safely work on these sealed refrigeration systems.

Many repairs are related to the various components in the water system. The water inlet solenoid valve is an electromechanical part that can get stuck or burn out, preventing the machine from filling. The water pump that circulates water over the evaporator plate can also fail, leading to a “no ice” situation. The various sensors that monitor water levels and ice thickness can also malfunction, causing the machine to operate erratically. Our technicians carry many of these common water system components on their service vehicles to facilitate a faster repair.

We are committed to getting your business back up and running as quickly as possible. We know that every hour of downtime can mean lost revenue. After our technician provides a complete diagnosis, you will receive a clear, upfront price quote for the necessary repair. We will not begin any work without your full approval. Our goal is to provide a fast turnaround on your repair, with a focus on a durable solution that you can rely on. We strive to be a trusted partner in keeping your commercial kitchen operational.

Most Common Ice Maker Repair Questions

When your business’s ice machine breaks down, you need answers fast to make informed operational decisions. We have answered some of the most common questions business owners and managers in Lebanon ask about commercial ice maker repairs.

If your commercial ice machine suddenly stops producing ice, there are a few immediate things your staff can check before calling for service. First, locate the dedicated circuit breaker for the ice machine in your building’s electrical panel and ensure it has not been tripped. Second, find the main power switch on the ice machine itself and make sure it is in the “on” position. Finally, locate the water supply shutoff valve for the machine and confirm that it is fully open. These three simple checks can sometimes resolve the issue without the need for a service call.

If those steps do not solve the problem, the issue is internal to the machine and requires a professional technician. Do not encourage your staff to open the machine’s service panels. The most common internal causes for a sudden stop in production are a failed water inlet valve, a broken water pump, or a faulty harvest mechanism. A failure of a key refrigeration component, like the condenser fan motor, will also cause the machine to shut down on a safety control.

It is best to call for professional service as soon as you have confirmed the basic power and water supply are on. Continuing to cycle a malfunctioning machine on and off can sometimes cause more significant damage to other components. Our technicians can quickly diagnose the internal fault and prevent a minor issue from turning into a major one. Promptly calling for service is the most effective way to minimize downtime.

New or loud noises from your commercial ice machine are a clear warning sign of a mechanical problem. These sounds should be addressed immediately to prevent a more catastrophic failure. A loud grinding or squealing noise often points to a failing motor. This could be the condenser fan motor on an air-cooled unit, the main water pump motor, or a gear motor that operates the harvest mechanism. These sounds are typically caused by worn-out bearings that are about to seize up completely.

A loud humming or buzzing noise that is not followed by the machine starting up can indicate a problem with the compressor or its electrical components. The compressor may be trying to start but is unable to, which can quickly lead to damage. A loud rattling sound can sometimes be a simpler issue, like a loose access panel or a fan blade hitting a piece of debris. However, it can also indicate a more serious internal problem.

If you or your staff hear any of these unusual sounds, the best course of action is to turn the machine off immediately. This will prevent the failing component from causing a cascade of damage to other parts of the system. You should then call SWVA Mechanical for a service visit. A technician can safely inspect the unit, identify the source of the noise, and replace the failing component before it leads to a much more expensive repair.

The cost to repair a commercial ice machine can range from a minor expense to a significant investment. The final price is entirely dependent on which part has failed. Many common repairs are relatively affordable. For example, replacing a faulty water inlet valve, a broken water level sensor, or cleaning a clogged drain line are all on the lower end of the cost spectrum. These are common service calls that can often be completed quickly with parts from our service vehicle.

The repair cost increases for more significant components. Replacing a water pump, a condenser fan motor, or the main electronic control board are all moderately expensive repairs. These parts carry a higher cost from the manufacturer, and the labor to install them is more involved. These types of repairs are a notable but often necessary expense to keep a valuable piece of equipment operational. We will always provide an upfront quote for these repairs.

The most expensive repairs involve the sealed refrigeration system. A failed compressor is the most costly component to replace. The job requires a certified technician to recover refrigerant, replace the heavy compressor, and then recharge the system. This job is very labor-intensive. In fact, if the compressor fails on an older machine, the cost of the repair can be a significant percentage of the cost of a new unit. At that point, we would discuss both the repair and replacement options with you.

This is a critical business decision that requires weighing several factors. The first consideration is the age and overall condition of the machine. A commercial ice machine typically has a service life of about 7 to 10 years, depending on its quality and how well it has been maintained. If your machine is approaching this age and is facing a major repair, it may be more financially prudent to invest in a new, reliable machine rather than continuing to fix an old one.

You must also consider the cost of the repair versus the cost of a new machine. A good business rule of thumb is to seriously consider replacement if a single repair costs 30-50% of the price of a new unit. Pouring a large sum of money into an old machine is often not a wise investment, as other components are likely to start failing soon. This can lead to a frustrating and expensive cycle of repeated service calls and downtime.

Finally, and most importantly for a business, you must consider the cost of unreliability. An old ice machine that breaks down frequently can cost you a significant amount in lost sales and customer dissatisfaction. The stress and disruption caused by an unreliable machine can often outweigh the cost of a new one. A new machine comes with a warranty and the peace of mind of knowing you have a reliable supply of ice. We can provide you with both the repair cost and a quote for a new machine to help you make the best business decision.

The “clean” or “descale” light on your ice machine is an important indicator that should not be ignored. When this light is illuminated or flashing, it is the machine’s control board telling you that it is time for a full cleaning cycle. The machine’s internal timer has determined that enough cycles have passed that a significant buildup of scale and slime is likely present. It is a mandatory maintenance reminder that is built into the machine’s software to encourage proper upkeep.

On many modern commercial ice machines, this is more than just a reminder; it is a lockout feature. If the cleaning cycle is not performed within a certain period after the light comes on, the machine may automatically shut down and refuse to make more ice. This feature is designed by manufacturers to force operators to maintain the equipment. It prevents severe scale buildup from causing catastrophic damage to the components. It also helps to protect public health by discouraging the use of an unsanitary machine.

If you see this light, you should schedule a professional maintenance visit as soon as possible. A technician will need to perform the full, multi-step sanitizing and descaling procedure to reset the control board’s timer. Simply pressing a reset button will not solve the problem. The machine needs the thorough cleaning that the light is calling for. This feature is a valuable tool for ensuring your business stays on a regular maintenance schedule.

We understand that for any business, minimizing downtime is the highest priority. The duration of the repair depends entirely on the nature of the problem. Our service vehicles are stocked with a wide range of common parts for major ice machine brands. This includes water pumps, inlet valves, control sensors, and fan motors. If the failure is one of these common components, our goal is to complete the repair and get your machine back online in a single visit, often within just a few hours.

The repair will take longer if a major, non-stocked part is required. The main electronic control board for a specific model or a large compressor are examples of parts that may need to be ordered from a local supply house. If this is the case, we will do everything we can to get the part as quickly as possible, often by the next business day. We will communicate with you clearly about the expected arrival time of the part and schedule the follow-up visit immediately.

We recognize how critical your ice supply is. Our entire repair process is geared toward getting you back in business fast. From our priority dispatching for emergency calls to our well-stocked service vehicles, every step is designed to reduce the time your business is without its essential ice machine. We will always give you a realistic estimate of the repair timeline once our diagnosis is complete.

For the safety of your staff and the protection of your equipment, we strongly advise against having untrained employees attempt to repair an ice machine. Beyond the simple checks of the power and water supply, any further troubleshooting should be left to a professional. A commercial ice machine contains high-voltage electrical components that can pose a serious risk of electrical shock. It is not safe for anyone without proper electrical training to open the service panels. This is a significant liability risk for your business.

Attempting a DIY repair can also easily cause more damage to the machine. A simple mistake, like using the wrong tool or overtightening a connection, can break a delicate component. This can turn a simple, affordable repair into a much more complex and expensive one. Furthermore, any work done by unauthorized personnel will immediately void your manufacturer’s warranty. You could be left paying the full price for a major component that otherwise would have been covered.

The most effective way for your staff to help is by providing a clear and detailed description of the problem to our technician. Information like what the machine was doing before it failed, any unusual noises it was making, or any error codes it was displaying is incredibly valuable. This helps the technician to diagnose the problem faster. Leave the hands-on work to the trained and insured professionals.

It is absolutely essential to hire a certified refrigeration technician to work on your commercial ice machine. An ice machine is not just a water appliance; it is a piece of commercial refrigeration equipment. The system that actually freezes the water is a sealed system containing high-pressure refrigerant. Federal law requires that any technician who accesses this sealed system be EPA Section 608 certified. This certification ensures they are trained to handle these chemicals safely and in an environmentally responsible manner.

A certified refrigeration technician understands the entire system, not just the water components. They can diagnose problems with the compressor, the condenser, and the metering devices. They have the specialized tools, like refrigerant gauges and vacuum pumps, that are required for any sealed system repair. A general plumber or handyman does not have this certification or these tools. They are not legally allowed to work on the refrigeration side of the machine and lack the knowledge to diagnose it correctly.

By hiring a certified refrigeration technician from SWVA Mechanical, you are ensuring that the person working on your equipment is a qualified expert. They can accurately diagnose any problem, whether it is with the water system, the electrical system, or the refrigeration system. This leads to a faster, more accurate repair and prevents the risk of further damage from an inexperienced person working on the machine.
