Honest Reviews From Our Clients
Businesses across Southwest Virginia trust SWVA Mechanical for refrigeration services that are done right the first time. Here’s what real customers have to say about their experience:
We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.
I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.
Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.
Called with HVAC issue on Monday had a resolution by Tuesday morning. Owner Nick is amazing. Goes above and beyond for his customers. Technician that came out was 5 star! Polite, conscientious regarding cleanliness, and super helpful. Pricing is extremely reasonable. I will never use another company!
Nick Cross and his team are amazing. Did a great job for us. They are polite, professional and knowledgable. Our challenge is with a house built in 1913 and their work has given us more control over our HVAC system and made our living space more comfortable. Price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.
Samuel came out and did a great job!! He serviced my unit inside and outside. Company was amazing to begin with. Answered and returned my calls every time. They were prompt in letting me know when they would arrive and informed me of all repairs before doing anything. Amazing job!! Highly recommended.
Highly Recommend! Brian and his team done an outstanding job installing my new Mitsubishi mini splits. I couldn’t have asked for a better HVAC Team than SWVA Mechanicals!
I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!
I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Ice Maker Maintenance Service
A commercial ice machine demands regular, detailed maintenance to comply with health standards and operate reliably. Our professional service is specifically designed to address the sanitation and mechanical needs of high-volume commercial units. We follow a meticulous checklist to ensure every critical component is cleaned, sanitized, and inspected. This preventative care is essential for any business serving the public, including restaurants, hotels, bars, and healthcare facilities. A scheduled maintenance agreement is the most effective strategy to ensure your business consistently serves safe, high-quality ice while protecting your investment.
The most important part of our service is the sanitizing process. This step is designed to eliminate any biological contaminants that may be growing inside your machine. Our technicians use a food-safe, nickel-safe sanitizing solution that is specifically formulated for ice machines. We circulate this solution through the entire water system, including the water pump, distribution tubes, and evaporator plate. This process effectively kills any bacteria, mold, mildew, or algae that may be present. This step is absolutely essential for producing ice that is safe for consumption and for complying with health department regulations.
In addition to sanitizing, we also perform a descaling of your machine. The water in our region contains dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals can form a hard, chalky deposit known as scale on all the water-related components. Our technicians use a specialized acidic descaling solution to dissolve and remove this mineral buildup. Descaling is crucial for maintaining your machine’s performance. It prevents scale from clogging water lines and sensors. It also keeps the evaporator plate clean, allowing for a full and fast harvest of ice.
Our service includes a thorough cleaning of all accessible internal and external components. We will remove and manually clean parts like the water trough, distribution tubes, and ice thickness sensors. For air-cooled models, we will remove and clean the air filter to ensure proper airflow to the condenser. We will also clean the condenser coil itself, as a dirty coil can reduce the machine’s ice production capacity. The exterior of the unit and the storage bin will also be wiped down and cleaned. This meticulous cleaning restores the machine to a like-new condition.
While the machine is disassembled for cleaning, our technicians will perform a visual inspection of all mechanical components. We will check the water pump, the harvest mechanism, and other moving parts for any signs of excessive wear or damage. We will inspect all water tubing and connections for any leaks or kinks. The electrical wiring is also checked for any loose or corroded connections. This mechanical inspection helps us to identify any potential problems early. It can help you avoid a sudden and inconvenient breakdown.
A critical part of maintaining high-quality ice is replacing the water filter cartridge. Most ice machines are, or should be, equipped with an external water filtration system. These filters have a limited lifespan and must be replaced regularly, typically every six months. As part of our maintenance service, we will replace your old filter cartridge with a new one. A fresh filter is essential for removing chlorine taste and odor from the water. It also plays a vital role in reducing the amount of scale-forming minerals that enter the machine.
For any business, consistent and safe ice production is critical. The best way to ensure this is with a scheduled maintenance agreement from SWVA Mechanical. We recommend a professional cleaning and tune-up at least twice a year for all commercial ice machines. A maintenance plan makes this easy and affordable. We will remind you when it is time for service and provide you with a discounted rate. This proactive approach is the smartest way to ensure you are always serving safe ice, complying with health codes, and protecting your valuable equipment.

Most Common Ice Maker Maintenance Questions
For a business, a commercial ice machine is a critical piece of equipment that requires specific care. Business owners and managers often have questions about this essential maintenance. We have answered the most common questions our commercial clients in Lebanon ask.
The recommended frequency for professional ice maker maintenance depends on its usage and environment. For any commercial ice machine used in a restaurant, bar, hotel, or healthcare setting, we strongly recommend a professional service visit at least twice a year. This semi-annual schedule is the industry standard for ensuring the machine remains sanitary and complies with health department regulations. The high volume of ice production in a commercial setting leads to faster mineral and biological buildup. A six-month cleaning interval is essential.
For residential undercounter or portable ice makers, a professional tune-up once a year is often sufficient. However, if your home has particularly hard water or if the machine is used heavily, a semi-annual service is still a better choice. The goal is to prevent a significant buildup of scale and slime. Regular professional cleanings will ensure your home’s ice is always fresh, clear, and safe for your family and guests. Our technicians can assess your machine and recommend the ideal service frequency for your specific situation.
Ultimately, you cannot over-clean an ice machine. More frequent maintenance will only lead to better performance and a longer lifespan for the unit. For any business serving the public, the minimal cost of a second annual cleaning is negligible compared to the risk of a failed health inspection or making a customer sick. The safety and sanitation of your ice should always be the top priority.
Sanitizing and descaling are two distinct and equally important processes in a complete ice maker cleaning. Sanitizing is a process that targets biological contaminants. We use a specialized, food-safe sanitizing solution that is formulated to kill microorganisms like bacteria, mold, mildew, and algae. These can thrive in the damp, dark interior of an ice machine. The sanitizing process eliminates these harmful growths and any associated odors, ensuring the ice produced is safe and hygienic. This is primarily a health and safety step.
Descaling, on the other hand, is a process that targets mineral contaminants. Hard water contains dissolved minerals like calcium and magnesium. As water evaporates during the ice-making process, these minerals are left behind and form a hard, crusty deposit called scale. We use a food-safe, acidic descaling solution to dissolve and flush out these mineral deposits. Descaling is crucial for the mechanical health of the machine. It prevents scale from clogging water lines, jamming pumps, and coating sensors. This is primarily a performance and maintenance step.
A complete professional maintenance service must include both of these chemical cleaning cycles. Sanitizing alone will not remove the hard scale deposits. Descaling alone will not kill the bacteria and mold. Both must be performed to restore the machine to a truly clean and hygienic condition. Our technicians are trained to perform both processes safely and effectively, using the correct chemicals for your specific machine.
While there are some simple cleaning tasks a homeowner or business owner can perform, the deep cleaning and descaling process should be left to a professional. The most important user task is to regularly wipe out the inside of the ice storage bin with a sanitizer solution. This should be done frequently to keep the area where the ice is stored clean. For air-cooled models, the user can also clean the external air filter to maintain good airflow. These are helpful and important steps.
However, the full maintenance procedure is much more involved. It requires circulating specific cleaning chemicals through the entire water system of the machine. This must be done correctly to ensure the chemicals reach every component and are then thoroughly rinsed from the system. Our technicians are trained on the specific procedures for different brands and models. A professional service also involves partially disassembling the unit to manually clean parts like the water distribution tube and evaporator plate, which is not something an untrained person should attempt.
Furthermore, using the wrong type of chemical can cause permanent damage to the ice machine’s components. For example, some descalers are too harsh for the nickel plating on certain evaporator plates. A professional technician will have the correct, manufacturer-approved chemicals for your unit. For safety, effectiveness, and to avoid damaging your equipment, the semi-annual deep cleaning should always be performed by a qualified refrigeration technician.
If the ice from your machine has a noticeable off-taste or a bad smell, it is a clear sign that it needs service. The most common cause of bad-tasting ice is an old or exhausted water filter. The carbon element in the water filter is responsible for absorbing chlorine and other chemicals that cause bad tastes and odors. These filters have a limited capacity and typically need to be replaced every six months. If your filter is older than that, it is likely no longer doing its job, and those unpleasant tastes are passing through to the ice.
The other major cause of bad taste and odor is biological growth inside the machine itself. Mold and mildew growing on the internal components can impart a musty, earthy taste and smell to the ice. This is a sign that the machine is in desperate need of a professional cleaning and sanitizing service. The sanitizing solution will kill the microorganisms that are causing the odor. A clean machine with a fresh water filter will produce crystal clear ice that is completely neutral in taste and smell.
In some rare cases, an external factor could be the cause. If the ice machine is located near a trash can or other source of strong odors, the ice in the bin can actually absorb those odors from the air. This is why proper placement of the machine is also important. However, in almost every case, bad-tasting ice can be traced back to either a needed filter change or a needed professional cleaning.
Scale is the hard, chalky, whitish deposit that forms on surfaces that are in constant contact with hard water. It is primarily composed of mineral salts, mainly calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate. When water evaporates, these dissolved minerals are left behind, and they build up over time to form a crusty layer. This is the same type of deposit you might see on a shower head or a faucet. Because an ice maker is constantly cycling water, it is extremely prone to internal scale buildup.
Scale is very bad for your ice maker and can cause a wide range of problems. It can clog the small holes in the water distribution tube, which prevents water from flowing evenly over the evaporator plate. This results in small, incomplete, or misshapen ice cubes. Scale can coat the water level sensors and ice thickness probes, causing them to malfunction. This can lead to the machine overfilling with water or harvesting the ice too early or too late. It can also cause the water pump to seize up.
Most seriously, a layer of scale on the evaporator plate acts as an insulator. This makes it harder for the refrigeration system to freeze the water, forcing the machine to run much longer to produce a batch of ice. This wastes a significant amount of energy and puts a major strain on the compressor and other components. This can lead to premature equipment failure. Regular professional descaling is the only way to remove these harmful mineral deposits and protect your machine.
Yes, a noticeable drop in ice production is one of the most common symptoms of an ice machine that is overdue for maintenance. There are several issues addressed during a tune-up that can cause this problem. The most frequent cause is a dirty air-cooled condenser. If the air filter and the condenser coil on the machine are clogged with dust, grease, and debris, the unit cannot get rid of heat effectively. This makes the refrigeration system work inefficiently and dramatically reduces the amount of ice it can produce in a day.
Another common cause of low production is internal scale buildup. As scale forms on the evaporator plate, it insulates the plate from the water. This means the refrigeration system has to run much longer to freeze the water into a solid sheet of ice. This extends the length of each cycle, and therefore, the machine produces fewer batches of ice over a 24-hour period. A thorough descaling of the machine will restore the evaporator plate’s ability to freeze water quickly.
Other issues can also lead to low production. A clogged water distribution tube can prevent water from flowing over the entire evaporator plate, resulting in a smaller batch of ice with each harvest. A weak water pump can have a similar effect. A professional maintenance visit, which includes a thorough cleaning of all these components, will almost always restore a machine’s ice production capacity back to its original factory specification. It is the first and best solution for an underperforming machine.
Yes, consuming ice from a dirty machine can be genuinely dangerous and can cause illness. The internal components of an ice machine provide a dark, wet environment that is an ideal breeding ground for a variety of harmful microorganisms. This can include bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria, as well as various types of mold and slime. If these contaminants are allowed to grow inside the machine, they will inevitably be harvested along with the ice and will end up in a customer’s drink.
Ingesting these pathogens can lead to foodborne illnesses with symptoms ranging from mild stomach upset to more severe conditions requiring medical attention. For a business, serving contaminated ice is a massive liability. A single incident of a customer getting sick can lead to a lawsuit, a damaged reputation, and even a shutdown by the local health department. Health inspectors are trained to look for slime and mold inside ice machines, and it is one of the most common reasons for a critical violation.
The risk is simply not worth it. The only way to ensure the ice you serve is safe is to implement and strictly follow a regular, professional cleaning and sanitizing schedule. This removes the biological hazards from the food zone of the machine. The safety of your customers or your family should be the number one reason you invest in professional ice maker maintenance. Clean ice is safe ice.
A maintenance plan for an ice maker makes perfect sense, especially for any commercial establishment. For a business, the plan is not just about maintenance; it is about risk management and compliance. A scheduled maintenance agreement ensures that your machine is professionally cleaned and sanitized at regular intervals, which is essential for passing health inspections. It also drastically reduces the risk of your machine breaking down unexpectedly, which would cause a major disruption to your business operations. The cost of the plan is minimal compared to the cost of downtime.
A maintenance plan also helps to protect your significant investment in the equipment. Regular descaling and cleaning will extend the life of your ice machine and help it run more efficiently, saving you money on both electricity and future repairs. The plan makes the cost of this essential upkeep predictable and easy to budget for. You will also typically receive benefits like priority service and discounts on any repairs that may be needed between your scheduled tune-ups.
For a business, a maintenance plan is a must-have. It automates the process of keeping your machine clean, safe, and reliable. It allows you to focus on your customers, knowing that your ice supply is being professionally managed. Given the critical importance of sanitation and reliability, a maintenance agreement for a commercial ice machine is one of the smartest operational decisions a manager can make.
