We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Ice Maker Installation Service

Our installation service begins with a consultation to ensure you select the right ice machine for your business. We will discuss the various types of commercial units, including countertop, undercounter, and modular ice makers. We will also review the different types of ice, such as full cube, half cube, nugget, and flake, to determine which is best for your application. The most important considerations are the machine’s production capacity, measured in pounds of ice per 24 hours, and the storage bin’s capacity. We will help you choose a machine that can meet your peak business demand without wasting energy.

Before any work begins, our technicians will perform a thorough site assessment at your facility. We will verify that the chosen location has everything required for a successful commercial installation. This includes ensuring there is adequate space and proper ventilation around the machine, which is critical for air-cooled models common in kitchens. We will confirm the proximity of a potable water supply, an appropriate floor drain, and a dedicated electrical circuit with the correct voltage and amperage. This professional preparation ensures the installation day proceeds smoothly and efficiently, minimizing disruption to your business.

A correct water line installation is critical for both machine performance and public health. Our technicians will run a dedicated, food-grade water line to your new ice machine. We will install a new, easily accessible shutoff valve to allow for future servicing. We strongly recommend installing a commercial-grade water filtration system on this line. A filter system significantly improves the taste and clarity of your ice, enhancing your customers’ beverage experience. It also reduces scale buildup, which protects your equipment and lowers future maintenance costs.

Proper drainage is a major focus of a commercial ice machine installation and is heavily scrutinized by health inspectors. Our technicians will install a drain line with the correct pitch to ensure all wastewater is carried away effectively. To comply with all health codes, the drain line must have a proper air gap. This physical space between the drain tube and the floor drain prevents any possibility of contamination from the drain system backing up into your ice machine. This is a non-negotiable step for a sanitary, code-compliant installation.

On installation day, our team will carefully set your new ice machine in its designated location. We will ensure the unit is perfectly level, which is essential for the ice-making mechanism to function correctly. Once positioned, we will make the final, secure connections for the water supply line and the drain line. The unit will then be safely connected to its dedicated electrical circuit. We ensure all lines and cords are routed neatly and securely to prevent trip hazards in a busy commercial environment.

After the physical installation is complete, we initiate the system startup and testing process. We will turn on the water supply and meticulously check for any leaks at all connection points. We will then power on the unit and observe its first complete ice-making cycle. Our technicians verify that all stages of the cycle, from the water fill to the ice harvest, are operating according to manufacturer specifications. We will also check that the bin’s shut-off sensor is working correctly to prevent overproduction.

Our service concludes with training for you and your staff. We will explain the basic operation of your new machine. Most importantly, we will review the manufacturer’s required daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning schedules. Following proper sanitation procedures is absolutely essential for any business serving ice to the public. We will demonstrate how to perform any routine user tasks. Our goal is to ensure your team has the knowledge needed to keep your new ice machine operating safely and efficiently.

Most Common Ice Maker Installation Questions

A new commercial ice machine is a significant capital investment for any business. It is important to understand the requirements for a proper installation to protect that investment. We have answered some of the most common questions our commercial clients in Lebanon ask about this service.

There are three essential utility requirements for nearly every commercial ice maker installation. The first is a potable cold water supply line with a dedicated, accessible shutoff valve located within a few feet of the machine. The second critical requirement is a nearby floor drain or a low-profile wall drain. The drain must be positioned so that the machine can drain into it via gravity. The third requirement is a suitable electrical outlet. Most commercial machines require a dedicated circuit to handle their power needs, with specific voltage and amperage depending on the unit’s size.

Beyond the core utilities, the physical environment is also a major factor. Air-cooled ice machines are the most common type and require significant ventilation to operate efficiently. You must allow for at least six to twelve inches of clearance around all vents for air intake and exhaust. Placing a machine in a hot, tight closet without airflow will cause it to produce less ice and fail prematurely. The ambient temperature of the room should also ideally remain below 80 degrees Fahrenheit for optimal production.

Our technicians perform a detailed site assessment as the first step of any installation. We will verify the water, drain, and electrical connections are adequate for the machine you have selected. We will also confirm that the chosen location provides the necessary space and ventilation for the unit to operate reliably. This professional verification process ensures that your new equipment will perform to its factory specifications from day one.

Yes, we consider a commercial-grade water filtration system to be an essential and non-negotiable part of any professional ice maker installation. A quality filter system provides two critical benefits for any business. The first is the quality of the ice you serve to your customers. A proper filtration system removes chlorine and other impurities that cause unpleasant tastes and odors. It produces ice that is clear, hard, and clean-tasting, which directly improves the quality of the sodas, iced teas, and cocktails you serve.

The second and more crucial benefit is the protection of your equipment. Hard water causes mineral scale to build up inside the machine’s components. This scale clogs water lines, damages pumps, and insulates the evaporator plate, which drastically reduces efficiency and leads to costly breakdowns. A commercial water filter designed for ice machines contains scale inhibitors that prevent these mineral deposits from forming. This significantly extends the life of your ice machine and reduces the frequency of expensive maintenance calls.

While a filter system adds to the initial installation cost, it provides an immediate return on investment. It protects your expensive equipment from damage, reduces future maintenance costs, and ensures a positive experience for your customers. Given the high cost of commercial ice machines and the importance of serving a quality product, a water filter is the best insurance policy you can buy for your new equipment.

The terms air-cooled and water-cooled describe how the ice machine’s refrigeration system gets rid of heat. An air-cooled ice maker, the most common type, uses a fan to pull ambient air across a condenser coil, similar to a refrigerator. Air-cooled units are significantly more energy-efficient and do not consume any extra water beyond what is used to make the ice. This makes their operating costs much lower. They are the standard choice for the vast majority of commercial applications.

The main requirement of an air-cooled unit is that it needs a constant supply of cool air to breathe. This means it must be installed in a location with good ventilation and where the ambient temperature is reasonably controlled. They are not suitable for extremely hot kitchens or very small, unventilated closets, as they will overheat. They also release waste heat into the surrounding room, which can add to the load on your building’s air conditioning system.

A water-cooled ice maker uses a continuous flow of water to cool the condenser instead of air. Because they do not rely on the surrounding air, they can operate effectively in very hot or poorly ventilated environments where an air-cooled model would fail. They are also much quieter. However, water-cooled units are extremely inefficient from a water usage standpoint. They can use over 100 gallons of water just to produce 100 pounds of ice. For this reason, they are typically only recommended in very specific situations where an air-cooled model is not feasible.

Choosing the right production capacity is the most critical decision when selecting a commercial ice machine. Production capacity is measured in the pounds of ice a machine can produce in a 24-hour period. You must calculate your needs based on your peak business day, not an average day. It is always better to have a surplus of ice than to run out during a dinner rush. Running out of ice means lost revenue and a poor customer experience.

The amount of ice needed varies by business type. For a full-service restaurant, a common guideline is 1.5 pounds of ice per customer meal. For a bar or nightclub serving many drinks, that number can be as high as 3 pounds per customer. A hotel may need 5 pounds per room, while a healthcare facility may need 10 pounds per patient bed. We can help you use these industry-standard metrics to calculate your specific daily ice requirement.

It is also critical to remember that a machine’s stated capacity is based on ideal conditions, such as 70-degree air and 50-degree water. In a real-world hot kitchen, a machine’s actual output may be 15-20% lower than its rating. For this reason, we recommend adding a 20% buffer to your calculated daily need. This ensures you will have enough ice even on your busiest day in the middle of summer. Selecting the right size is a science, and our experts can guide you to the perfect machine.

For a commercial establishment, you should never attempt to install an ice maker yourself. The risks to your business, your property, and your warranty are far too great. The plumbing connections for the water supply and drain line must be done perfectly. A small leak can lead to a major flood, causing extensive property damage and business interruption. More importantly, the drain line must be installed with a proper air gap to meet local health codes. An improper installation will result in a failed health inspection.

A failed health inspection can have serious consequences for your business, including fines and even temporary closure. It can also damage your reputation with customers. A professional installer who is familiar with local commercial plumbing and health codes will guarantee your installation is compliant. This protects your business from liability. Furthermore, all commercial ice machine manufacturers require installation by a licensed refrigeration or plumbing professional to keep the warranty valid. A DIY installation will immediately void your warranty on your new, expensive equipment.

The significant risks of water damage, health code violations, and a voided warranty far outweigh any potential savings from a DIY installation. This is a job that requires professional expertise to protect your customers, your investment, and your business’s ability to operate. Trust the certified and insured technicians at SWVA Mechanical to ensure your installation is done correctly and safely.

The time required for a commercial ice maker installation depends on the complexity of the job and the site’s readiness. If we are replacing an existing unit and all the necessary utilities are already in place, the installation can be quite efficient. A standard replacement of an undercounter or a small modular unit can often be completed in three to five hours. Our goal in these situations is to minimize the disruption to your business operations by performing the swap as quickly as possible.

The project will take longer if new utility lines are required. If a new water line, drain, or dedicated electrical circuit needs to be installed, this will add significant time to the project. The installation of a very large modular ice machine with a separate storage bin or a remote condenser system is also a more involved process. These larger projects can easily take a full day or more to complete correctly. We will coordinate with other trades, like electricians, if needed.

During our initial site assessment, we will evaluate the scope of work required for your specific installation. This allows us to provide you with a clear and realistic timeline for the project. We understand that for a business, time is money. We will work diligently and efficiently to complete the installation within the agreed-upon timeframe, allowing you to get back to serving your customers with minimal downtime.

The proper installation of the drain line is one of a commercial ice machine’s most critical health and safety features. In almost all commercial kitchens and bars, the drain line must be routed to a floor drain. The tube from the ice machine is positioned so it empties directly into the drain opening in the floor. For some undercounter bar units, a dedicated standpipe, similar to a washing machine drain, may be used. The key principle is that the water must be able to flow freely out of the machine via gravity.

The single most important rule, which is a strict health code requirement, is the use of an air gap. An air gap is a physical space of at least one to two inches between the bottom of the drain tube and the top of the floor drain. The tube must not extend down into the drain pipe. This physical separation makes it impossible for dirty water or sewage from the building’s drainage system to ever be siphoned back up into the ice machine. This prevents cross-contamination and is something every health inspector will look for.

If a suitable gravity drain is not located near the machine, a condensate pump must be used. The drain line from the ice machine will empty into the pump’s reservoir. The pump will then automatically push the water through a small tube to a suitable drain, such as a utility sink or another floor drain. A professional technician will ensure that this setup also includes the necessary air gaps to remain code compliant. We will always design the most effective and sanitary drainage solution for your specific layout.

A new commercial ice machine requires a strict and regular maintenance schedule to produce safe ice and to protect your investment. The damp interior of an ice machine is a perfect environment for the growth of bacteria, slime, and mold. For any business serving ice to the public, preventing this growth is a critical food safety responsibility. Every ice machine manufacturer provides a schedule of required cleaning procedures that must be followed. Failure to do so can result in health code violations.

There are two main components to professional maintenance: sanitizing and descaling. We recommend a professional service visit at least twice a year. During this visit, a technician will circulate a food-safe sanitizer through the entire system to kill any biological contaminants. They will also circulate a descaling solution to remove hard water mineral deposits, or scale, from the internal components. This two-part chemical cleaning is essential for hygiene and for the mechanical health of the machine.

Beyond the semi-annual professional service, your staff should be trained on daily and weekly cleaning tasks. This includes regularly sanitizing the ice scoop and wiping down the inside of the storage bin. The machine’s external air filter should also be cleaned on a weekly or monthly basis. Adhering to a consistent cleaning and maintenance schedule is the only way to ensure you are always in compliance with health codes and are serving a safe, quality product to your customers.
