We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Generac Generator Repair Service

Our repair service begins with an expert diagnostic process. When you call us with a generator issue, our technician will start by retrieving the detailed fault code from the generator’s onboard controller. This code points us in the right direction and allows us to quickly narrow down the potential causes of the problem. We will then perform a series of targeted tests on the generator’s fuel, mechanical, and electrical systems. This methodical approach ensures we identify the precise root cause of the failure, which is the key to an effective and lasting repair.

The most common repair call we receive is for a generator that fails to start. This issue is very frequently traced back to a problem with the starting battery. Our technician will test the battery’s health and inspect the terminals and cables for corrosion or loose connections. If the battery is healthy, the problem may lie with other parts of the ignition system, such as a faulty starter motor, a bad spark plug, or a problem with the fuel supply. We can diagnose any of these no-start conditions to get your generator running again.

A generator that starts but then runs rough or shuts down after a short period is another common issue. This can often be caused by a problem in the fuel system. The fuel regulator could be failing, or there could be a blockage in the fuel line. For engines running on propane, a problem with the vaporizer can also cause poor performance. Our technicians are trained to diagnose and service these complex fuel systems to restore smooth and stable operation to your generator’s engine.

Electrical faults are also a frequent source of generator problems. The generator’s alternator is responsible for producing electricity, and a failure in this component will result in no power output. Other issues can arise from the generator’s electronic controller, which is the brain of the system. A faulty sensor, a bad voltage regulator, or a damaged control board can all cause the system to malfunction. Our certified technicians have the specialized knowledge to troubleshoot and repair these complex electrical and electronic systems.

Any issue with the Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) is a critical failure. The ATS is what allows your generator to function automatically. If the transfer switch is not working correctly, the generator may not receive the signal to start during an outage, or it may not be able to transfer the power to your property. Our technicians are experienced in diagnosing and repairing these intelligent switches. We can address issues with faulty contactors, control boards, or communication wiring between the ATS and the generator.

Our technicians arrive with service vehicles that are stocked with a wide range of common, genuine Generac replacement parts. This includes batteries, starters, spark plugs, air and oil filters, control boards, and various sensors. By carrying these parts with us, our goal is to complete the repair in a single visit whenever possible. This minimizes the time your backup power system is out of service and reduces the inconvenience to you. We are committed to a fast and efficient repair process.

At SWVA Mechanical, we believe in providing honest and transparent service. After our technician has completed the diagnosis and identified the cause of the failure, we will explain the problem to you clearly. You will receive a detailed, upfront price quote for the necessary repair before any work begins. We want you to be fully informed and comfortable with the proposed solution. Our goal is to earn your trust by providing expert repairs and straightforward communication.

Most Common Generac Generator Repair Questions

When your generator shows a fault light or fails to run correctly, it can be a stressful situation. We have answered some of the most common questions our Lebanon customers ask when they are facing a generator repair issue.

A solid red light on the side of your Generac generator indicates that a critical fault has occurred. The generator’s onboard controller has detected a problem that will prevent the unit from starting or running safely during a power outage. When you see a red light, your backup power system is not operational, and your home or business is not protected. You should call for professional service immediately. Do not wait until the next power outage to address the issue.

The red light can be triggered by a wide range of potential problems. Some of the most common causes include a dead or very weak starting battery, an engine over-crank error (meaning it tried to start but failed), a major engine issue like high temperature or low oil pressure, or a problem with the generator’s electrical output. A qualified technician can connect a diagnostic tool to the generator’s controller to read the specific fault code that caused the red light. This code will tell them exactly where to begin their troubleshooting process, which allows for a much faster and more accurate repair.

It is very important that you do not ignore a red light. It is your generator’s way of telling you that it needs immediate attention. Promptly calling for service ensures that a small problem does not turn into a larger, more expensive one and gets your essential backup power system back into a state of readiness.

A generator that fails to start is the most common repair issue, and the problem can almost always be traced back to one of three areas: the battery, the fuel system, or the ignition system. The single most frequent cause is a failed starting battery. If the battery is dead or too weak to turn the engine over with sufficient speed, the generator will not start. A technician will always begin by testing the health of the battery.

If the battery is good, the next area to check is the fuel system. For a generator running on natural gas or propane, there could be a problem with the fuel regulator, a stuck solenoid valve, or an issue with the gas pressure being supplied to the unit. The engine is simply not getting the fuel it needs to run. Our technicians are trained to diagnose and service these gaseous fuel systems safely.

The third possibility is an issue with the ignition system. The spark plugs may be old, fouled, or have an incorrect gap. The ignition coil or magneto could also have failed, meaning there is no spark to ignite the fuel. Our technicians will test the ignition system to ensure a strong, consistent spark is being delivered. By methodically checking these three key areas, we can quickly pinpoint the cause of any no-start condition.

A generator engine that starts but runs poorly or shuts down after a few minutes is often suffering from a fuel-related problem. The engine may be getting just enough fuel to start, but not enough to continue running smoothly under load. This can be caused by a partially clogged fuel filter or a failing fuel regulator that is not providing a consistent pressure. On a propane (LP) system, a problem with the vaporizer, which turns the liquid propane into a gas, can also lead to these symptoms, especially in cold weather.

Another common cause for this issue is a problem with the engine’s air intake or governor. If the air filter is extremely dirty and clogged, the engine will be starved for air and will not be able to run efficiently. The engine’s governor is a mechanical device that is designed to keep the engine running at a constant speed (typically 3600 RPM). If the governor is malfunctioning or out of adjustment, the engine speed can become erratic, which will cause the generator’s controller to shut the system down as a safety measure.

These types of running issues require a technician with specific small engine expertise. Our service team is trained to diagnose and repair the complex fuel and governor systems on Generac engines. We can clean the fuel system, replace faulty regulators, and adjust the governor to restore smooth and stable operation to your generator.

The cost of a Generac generator repair can vary greatly depending on the specific component that has failed. Many common repairs are relatively affordable. For example, replacing a failed starting battery is one of the most frequent repairs and is on the lower end of the cost spectrum. Other common, lower-cost repairs include replacing worn-out spark plugs, a clogged air filter, or a faulty engine sensor. These are often considered part of a major tune-up.

The repair cost increases for more significant electrical or mechanical components. Replacing a starter motor, a fuel regulator, or the main electronic control board are all examples of moderately expensive repairs. These parts are more complex and carry a higher cost from the manufacturer. The labor to access and replace these components is also more involved. These are often necessary repairs to keep your significant investment in good working order.

The most expensive repairs involve the generator’s core components. A failure of the main alternator, which is the part that generates the electricity, is a major and costly repair. A catastrophic internal engine failure is also a very significant expense. For these major failures on an older generator, we will always provide you with a detailed quote. We will also have a frank discussion with you about the cost-effectiveness of a major repair versus potentially replacing the unit.

While it may be tempting to try and fix your generator yourself, we strongly advise against it for both safety and performance reasons. A standby generator is a complex piece of equipment that involves high-voltage electricity, flammable fuel, and a mechanical engine. Attempting a repair without the proper training, tools, and safety knowledge can be extremely dangerous. A mistake can lead to electrical shock, fire, or serious personal injury. It is a significant risk that is not worth the potential savings.

A DIY repair attempt can also easily lead to more significant and expensive damage. For example, incorrectly diagnosing an electrical problem and replacing the wrong part could damage the new part and the sensitive main control board. The cost to then repair the original problem and the new damage will be much higher than the initial professional repair would have been. An improper repair can also void your manufacturer’s warranty.

Our certified technicians have the diagnostic software, specialized tools, and factory training to work on Generac generators safely and effectively. We can quickly and accurately identify the root cause of the problem and perform a lasting repair using genuine parts. For the safety of your property and the reliability of your backup power system, all but the most basic maintenance should be left to the professionals.

The Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) should be almost silent during normal standby operation. If you hear a loud and persistent buzzing or humming sound coming from the transfer switch box, it is a sign of a potential problem that should be inspected by a qualified technician. The most common cause of this noise is a failing contactor or relay inside the switch. A contactor is a heavy-duty electrical switch, and as it wears out, it can begin to vibrate and create a loud buzzing sound.

This buzzing is often a sign that the contactor is not making a solid connection, which can lead to electrical arcing. This arcing creates heat, which can damage the contactor and the surrounding wiring. If left unaddressed, a failing contactor can eventually fail completely. This could either prevent the generator from powering your home during an outage, or in a worst-case scenario, it could fail to disconnect you from the grid, creating a dangerous situation.

While some very faint electrical humming can be normal for any electrical panel, a loud and noticeable buzz from your ATS is a clear indication that a component is wearing out. You should call for a service visit to have the transfer switch inspected. A technician can test the components and replace a failing contactor before it leads to a complete failure of your automatic power system.

Any fluid leak from your generator is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. If you see a puddle of oil or notice the smell of gasoline or propane near your generator, you should call for service right away. An oil leak indicates that a seal or gasket in the engine has failed. The generator’s engine contains several quarts of oil, and a significant leak can cause the engine to run low on oil. This can lead to severe internal engine damage if the generator were to run during an outage. A technician will need to find the source of the leak and replace the failed gasket.

A fuel leak is an even more serious and dangerous situation. A natural gas or propane leak creates a significant fire and explosion hazard. If you smell gas near your generator, you should immediately shut off the fuel supply to the unit if you know how to do so safely. You should then call for emergency service. The leak could be coming from a cracked flexible fuel line or a faulty fitting. A technician will need to repair the leak and pressure-test the entire fuel line to ensure it is safe.

Never ignore a fluid leak, no matter how small it seems. It is a sign of a developing problem that can lead to either catastrophic equipment failure or a serious safety hazard. A prompt repair is essential to keep your generator system safe and reliable.

The single most effective way to prevent unexpected generator repairs is to be diligent about performing professional annual maintenance. The vast majority of emergency repair calls we receive are for issues that could have been caught and addressed during a routine maintenance visit. A battery that fails during an outage would likely have shown signs of weakness during a professional load test. An engine that fails to start due to a clogged fuel line could have been prevented with a routine inspection.

Preventative maintenance is a proactive approach. It allows a trained technician to find and fix small problems before they become large, emergency situations. Replacing a worn belt during a tune-up is a minor, inexpensive task. Having that same belt break during an extended power outage could cause the engine to overheat and lead to major damage. The small, predictable cost of an annual maintenance plan is the best insurance you can buy against large, unpredictable emergency repair bills.

By investing in a professional annual maintenance service from SWVA Mechanical, you are taking the most important step you can to ensure the reliability of your generator. It will save you money on repairs, extend the life of your equipment, and provide you with the confidence that your system will be ready to perform its critical job when you need it most.
