Honest Reviews From Our Clients
Homeowners across Southwest Virginia trust SWVA Mechanical for HVAC services that are done right the first time. Here’s what real customers have to say about their experience:

We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.

I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.

Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.

Called with HVAC issue on Monday had a resolution by Tuesday morning. Owner Nick is amazing. Goes above and beyond for his customers. Technician that came out was 5 star! Polite, conscientious regarding cleanliness, and super helpful. Pricing is extremely reasonable. I will never use another company!

Nick Cross and his team are amazing. Did a great job for us. They are polite, professional and knowledgable. Our challenge is with a house built in 1913 and their work has given us more control over our HVAC system and made our living space more comfortable. Price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.

Samuel came out and did a great job!! He serviced my unit inside and outside. Company was amazing to begin with. Answered and returned my calls every time. They were prompt in letting me know when they would arrive and informed me of all repairs before doing anything. Amazing job!! Highly recommended.

Highly Recommend! Brian and his team done an outstanding job installing my new Mitsubishi mini splits. I couldn’t have asked for a better HVAC Team than SWVA Mechanicals!

I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!

I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Nick and Brian explained everything in detail and Jesse and Sam did our install. We are very happy with the entire process. Furnace Maintenance Service
Our professional furnace maintenance service is a comprehensive tune-up designed to prepare your system for the heating season. This is a vital preventative service that addresses safety, efficiency, and reliability. Our certified technicians follow a detailed checklist that covers every aspect of your furnace’s operation. We do not just look over the system; we meticulously clean, inspect, and test all its critical components. From the burners and safety controls to the blower motor and venting, no part is overlooked. An annual tune-up is the single best way to ensure a worry-free winter. It provides peace of mind that your furnace is in top condition.
A key part of our maintenance visit involves cleaning the furnace burners and the ignition assembly. Over time, dust and debris can accumulate on the burners, leading to inefficient and incomplete combustion. Our technicians will carefully remove and clean the burners to ensure a clean, efficient flame. We also clean the flame sensor, a critical safety device that confirms the furnace has ignited. A dirty flame sensor is one of the most common reasons a furnace will fail to stay lit. We also inspect the hot surface ignitor to ensure it is in good condition and ready for another season of reliable starts.
The single most important safety task during a furnace tune-up is the heat exchanger inspection. The heat exchanger is the metal chamber that separates the toxic combustion gases from the clean air that circulates in your home. Over time, the constant expansion and contraction of this metal can cause cracks to form. A cracked heat exchanger can allow deadly, odorless carbon monoxide to leak into your home’s air supply. Our technicians perform a careful visual inspection of this critical component. This inspection is a vital measure to protect the health and safety of your family. It is a non-negotiable part of every service.
To ensure your furnace distributes heat effectively, we thoroughly clean the blower compartment. The blower wheel can become coated with dust and debris, which restricts airflow and reduces efficiency. A dirty blower motor has to work harder, which consumes more electricity and can lead to premature failure. Our technicians will clean the blower wheel and housing to restore proper airflow. We will also inspect the motor itself, checking its electrical connections and lubricating it if necessary. A clean and well-running blower is essential for both your furnace’s efficiency and your home’s comfort.
Modern furnaces are equipped with numerous safety controls designed to shut the unit down in an unsafe condition. During our maintenance visit, we test these safety switches to ensure they are working properly. This includes checking the high-limit switch, which prevents the furnace from overheating. We also test other pressure and safety switches that monitor the furnace’s operation. Verifying that these safety devices are functional is a crucial step in our tune-up process. It provides a critical layer of protection for your home and family. We never overlook these important safety checks.
For your furnace to operate efficiently and safely, it must have the correct gas pressure. Our technicians use a specialized instrument called a manometer to measure and adjust the gas pressure. We ensure it is set to the precise specifications required by the furnace manufacturer. We also perform a thorough inspection of the furnace’s venting system, also known as the flue pipe. We check for any blockages, such as bird nests or debris, that could impede the flow of exhaust gases. A clear and secure vent pipe is essential for safely removing all combustion byproducts from your home.
The best way to ensure you never miss this critical annual service is to join our maintenance agreement program. This makes caring for your furnace simple and affordable. Our plans are designed to provide the best value, often costing less than a one-time service call. Members of our maintenance program also receive valuable benefits like priority scheduling for any repair needs. You may also be eligible for discounts on parts and labor. We handle the scheduling for you, so you have one less thing to worry about. A maintenance plan is a smart investment in your safety and comfort.

Most Common Furnace Maintenance Questions
Your furnace is a major appliance that is critical for your family’s safety and comfort. It is natural to have questions about the maintenance required to keep it running properly. We have answered some of the most common questions Lebanon homeowners ask about this essential service.
To ensure safe and reliable operation, you must have your furnace professionally serviced once every year. This annual tune-up is recommended by all furnace manufacturers and safety organizations. A yearly schedule allows our technicians to address the normal wear and tear that occurs during a heating season. It also gives us the opportunity to catch small problems before they escalate into major, expensive breakdowns. Sticking to an annual maintenance schedule is the single most effective way to extend the life of your furnace. It is a critical investment in your home’s infrastructure.
The ideal time to schedule your annual furnace maintenance is in the early fall. Servicing your unit before the cold weather sets in ensures it is clean, safe, and ready for winter. This proactive timing helps you avoid a breakdown on the very first cold night of the year. Scheduling in the fall also provides more flexibility, as it is before the busy winter season when technicians are in high demand for emergency repairs. By taking care of maintenance early, you can enter the winter season with complete confidence in your heating system. Do not wait until it is freezing outside to think about your furnace.
Skipping your annual tune-up is a significant risk. A neglected furnace is much less efficient, which means you will pay more in monthly heating bills. It is also far more likely to fail unexpectedly, leaving you without heat when you need it most. Most importantly, skipping maintenance means you are also skipping critical safety inspections. This increases the risk of dangerous conditions like a carbon monoxide leak. For the safety, efficiency, and reliability of your system, an annual professional tune-up is essential.
A professional furnace tune-up is a comprehensive preventative maintenance service for your heating system. The service can be broken down into three main categories: cleaning, inspecting, and testing. The cleaning portion of the visit is extensive. Our technicians will clean the furnace burners to promote efficient combustion. We clean the flame sensor for reliable operation and the blower compartment for proper airflow. We will also replace your standard air filter. This thorough cleaning process improves both efficiency and indoor air quality. It is the foundation of a good tune-up.
The inspection portion of the service is focused heavily on safety and reliability. The most critical inspection is of the heat exchanger, where we look for any cracks or corrosion. We visually inspect all wiring and electrical connections to ensure they are tight and secure. We also inspect the furnace’s venting system for any blockages or leaks. The entire ignition assembly is inspected for signs of wear. This detailed inspection process is designed to identify any potential problems or safety hazards before they can cause a failure.
Finally, our tune-up concludes with a series of operational tests. We test the full ignition sequence to ensure the furnace starts up reliably. We use specialized instruments to measure the gas pressure and adjust it if necessary. All of the furnace’s safety controls are tested to ensure they are functioning correctly. We also measure the temperature rise across the unit to confirm proper airflow. This final testing phase verifies that your furnace is operating safely and at its peak performance level as designed by the manufacturer.
The price of an annual furnace maintenance visit is a very small investment, especially when compared to the potential costs it helps you avoid. The tune-up fee is minor when weighed against the high cost of an emergency repair or a complete furnace replacement. Furthermore, the service helps your furnace run more efficiently, which lowers your monthly heating bills. The fuel savings you can see over the course of a single winter can often meet or exceed the cost of the tune-up itself. It is a service that pays for itself in multiple ways.
We believe that this essential safety service should be affordable for every family. Our maintenance plans are designed to provide the best possible value. Joining a plan often costs less than paying for a one-off service call and locks in your price. It makes budgeting for this necessary upkeep simple and predictable. We are always transparent with our pricing and will explain all the benefits of our maintenance agreements. Our goal is to make it easy for you to keep your family safe and warm. We prioritize value and safety over everything else.
Think of furnace maintenance not as an expense, but as a crucial investment in safety and savings. The service can prevent a costly emergency breakdown on a freezing winter night. It can prevent a dangerous carbon monoxide leak by identifying a cracked heat exchanger early. It keeps your heating bills as low as possible by ensuring your system runs efficiently. When you consider these significant benefits, the modest cost of a professional tune-up is an incredible value. It is one of the smartest decisions a homeowner can make each year.
The primary indicator that your furnace needs maintenance is simply the passage of time; it should be serviced once every year. However, there are also performance-related signs that can tell you a tune-up is overdue. One of the most visible signs on a gas furnace is the color of the burner flame. A healthy and efficient furnace flame should be a steady, bright blue color. If you see a flame that is yellow, orange, or appears to be flickering weakly, it is a sign of improper combustion. This indicates the burners are dirty and need to be professionally cleaned.
You should also listen for unusual noises coming from your furnace. While a furnace will make some noise during normal operation, loud sounds like banging, rattling, or high-pitched squealing are not normal. These noises often indicate a problem with the blower motor or other mechanical parts that are loose or failing. Another sign is short cycling, which is when the furnace turns on and off frequently without completing a full heating cycle. This is often a sign of restricted airflow or an overheating issue that needs to be addressed.
Pay attention to your comfort and your utility bills as well. If you notice a sudden and significant increase in your heating costs compared to previous years, it is a strong sign that your furnace has lost its efficiency. Likewise, if some rooms in your house feel cold while others are warm, it could indicate an airflow problem related to a dirty blower. Any of these signs should prompt you to call for a professional maintenance visit, even if it has not been a full year since your last service.
There is one very important furnace maintenance task that every homeowner can and should do themselves. This task is regularly checking and changing the air filter. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, which makes your furnace work harder, reduces efficiency, and can cause it to overheat. We recommend you inspect your air filter monthly and replace it whenever it appears dirty, or at least every three months. Keeping the area around your furnace clear of clutter and flammable materials is another simple but important safety step you can take.
However, all other furnace maintenance tasks should only be performed by a licensed and trained professional. A gas furnace is a complex appliance that combines natural gas, high voltage electricity, and fire. Attempting to service it yourself is extremely dangerous. A mistake could lead to a gas leak, a fire, or deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. Our technicians have years of training, specialized tools, and a deep understanding of how to work on these systems safely. The risks of a DIY repair or tune-up are simply too great to even consider.
Beyond the immense safety risks, there are other reasons to leave this job to a professional. You do not have the specialized tools needed to properly clean the burners or measure gas pressure. A professional tune-up is also required by most manufacturers to keep your furnace’s warranty valid. If you perform your own work and something goes wrong, you will likely be responsible for the full cost of the repair. For the safety of your family, the protection of your warranty, and the proper performance of your furnace, please trust this job to the experts at SWVA Mechanical.
Yes, annual furnace maintenance has been proven to lower heating bills by keeping your system running at its peak efficiency. A furnace that is dirty and out of tune has to run longer and burn more fuel to produce the same amount of heat. Our technicians address the key areas that rob your system of efficiency. For example, by cleaning the burners, we ensure that the fuel is combusting as completely as possible. A clean flame transfers heat more effectively. This means less fuel is wasted up the vent pipe.
A clean blower motor and wheel are also critical for efficiency. When the blower is caked with dust, it cannot move air effectively. This restricted airflow makes the furnace run longer to heat your home, which wastes fuel. By cleaning the blower assembly, we restore proper airflow and allow the system to distribute heat efficiently. We also check and adjust the gas pressure to the precise level required by the manufacturer. A furnace operating with incorrect gas pressure will not burn fuel efficiently. All of these small adjustments add up to significant savings.
When a furnace is professionally tuned, it operates exactly as the manufacturer intended. It will not have to work as hard or run as long to satisfy your thermostat’s setting. This reduction in runtime directly translates to lower natural gas or propane consumption. Over the course of an entire heating season, these savings can be substantial. The modest cost of the annual maintenance service is often fully recovered through the reduction in your monthly utility bills. It is a clear and simple way to save money.
While every step of our furnace tune-up is important for efficiency and reliability, one part stands above all others in terms of importance. The single most critical part of any furnace maintenance service is the comprehensive safety inspection. More specifically, the detailed inspection of the furnace’s heat exchanger is paramount. This component is the only thing separating the toxic gases from the combustion process from the air you and your family breathe. The integrity of the heat exchanger is directly linked to the safety of your household. Nothing is more important than this check.
A crack in the heat exchanger, even a microscopic one, can allow deadly carbon monoxide to leak into your home’s air supply. Carbon monoxide is known as the “silent killer” because it is completely odorless and colorless, making it impossible to detect without a working CO detector. During our tune-up, our technicians use high-powered lights and inspection cameras to carefully examine every surface of the heat exchanger for any signs of cracks, holes, or severe rust. Finding a potential defect early can literally be a life-saving discovery.
While saving money on fuel and preventing breakdowns are great benefits, they pale in comparison to ensuring your family’s safety. All the other steps in our maintenance process, such as testing safety controls and checking the venting system, are also part of this commitment to safety. You can have peace of mind knowing that when our technician leaves your home, your furnace has been thoroughly vetted for safe operation. This focus on safety is the true, core value of our professional maintenance service.
Yes, a furnace maintenance plan is absolutely worth it for any homeowner with a furnace. The plan is designed to provide both value and convenience. In most cases, the annual cost of the maintenance agreement is less than you would pay for a separate, one-time tune-up service. This provides an immediate and direct cost savings. The plan makes this essential safety service affordable and allows you to budget for it predictably. You get all the benefits of a professional tune-up at the best possible price.
The value of a maintenance plan extends well beyond the service itself. Our plan members receive priority service status. If your furnace breaks down on a cold winter day, you become our top priority, and we will dispatch a technician to you as quickly as possible. This is an incredible benefit when your family’s warmth and safety are on the line. Plan members also typically receive valuable discounts on any necessary repairs, including both parts and labor. This can save you a significant amount of money if your furnace does need a repair.
The most important benefit of a maintenance plan is the peace of mind it provides. You do not have to remember to schedule your annual safety inspection; we call you to set up the appointment. You can rest easy all winter knowing your furnace has been professionally cleaned, inspected, and tested for safe operation. A maintenance plan is a proactive approach that prioritizes safety, saves you money, and prevents the stress of unexpected breakdowns. It is an investment in your home and your family’s well-being.
