Honest Reviews From Our Clients
Homeowners across Southwest Virginia trust SWVA Mechanical for HVAC services that are done right the first time. Here’s what real customers have to say about their experience:
We recently had our downstairs residential heat pump fail after 17 years of service. Given the age of the system, and the newer technology available, it made sense to replace both the downstairs and upstairs systems (3- and 2-ton units respectively). I obtained quotes from 4 different installers and ultimately, we selected the Mitsubishi Hyperheat systems as the replacement. Brian at SWVA Mechanical gave us the best price and best answers to our questions and we selected them to do the work. I don't think it could have gone any better. They showed up when they said they would, staged the work so that we could stay warm (installed in December), were respectful of our property and answered all of our questions. All of the SWVA Mechanical workers were friendly, cheerful, and most importantly knowledgeable and competent. Brian encouraged us to consider the Mitsubishi Hyperheat system which would function as a heat pump to below 0 degrees F. Frankly, I had my doubts that a system without auxiliary heat would function properly at such low temperatures without an auxiliary heat source. However, this review is being written 1 week after some of the coldest temperature in years (as low as 6 degrees F and -1-degree wind chill) and I can testify that my house stayed at the temperature set point throughout this very cold period, and in fact my house has been more comfortable than it ever has in similar conditions. I have temperature monitoring data that proves the system worked as Brian said it would. Additionally, the numbers show significant electricity savings compared to the operation of the old system. I will also mention that Brian and his partner Nick, were persistent in being able to get a relatively new steam humidifier installed about 2 years ago to work with the Mitsubishi heat pump and air handler. That required a lot of effort on their part, and a non-standard installation that went beyond the manufacturers’ instructions. I can verify that what they did worked, that it was done properly and is functioning as it should. To reiterate, I would highly recommend SWVA VA Mechanical to anyone in need of their services. They check all the boxes... knowledge, expertise, dependability, reliability, and integrity. Based on our experiences, we intend to use them to service our new system in the future and would not hesitate to work with them again. In my opinion, and based on my past experiences, it would be very hard to do better than SWVA Mechanical in this line of work and expertise.
I had emergency when the heating system stopped working during the coldest days these past 2 months and Brain came the same day I called SWVM. No other HVAC company in the area would even give me an estimate of when they could come. Brain got the system running just in time for the lows in the teens the next few nights. If you need help this company will do all they can to help you. I would highly reccommend them.
Recently had an installation as well as a preventative maintenance on another unit. I received good communication about scheduling and pricing and they answered any question I had. They showed up on time and performed the work well. After the install, Brian came by to make sure I was happy with the install and that I was fully taken care of. Subsequently for the preventative maintenance that Samuel performed, he thoroughly cleaned and tested the units and communicated to me the way that the unit was originally wired may not be optimal and explained the pros/cons of making a minor adjustment which I had him do. I'm very happy with the service provided and plan to use SWVA Mechanical for any future HVAC needs.
Called with HVAC issue on Monday had a resolution by Tuesday morning. Owner Nick is amazing. Goes above and beyond for his customers. Technician that came out was 5 star! Polite, conscientious regarding cleanliness, and super helpful. Pricing is extremely reasonable. I will never use another company!
Nick Cross and his team are amazing. Did a great job for us. They are polite, professional and knowledgable. Our challenge is with a house built in 1913 and their work has given us more control over our HVAC system and made our living space more comfortable. Price was very reasonable. Highly recommended.
Samuel came out and did a great job!! He serviced my unit inside and outside. Company was amazing to begin with. Answered and returned my calls every time. They were prompt in letting me know when they would arrive and informed me of all repairs before doing anything. Amazing job!! Highly recommended.
Highly Recommend! Brian and his team done an outstanding job installing my new Mitsubishi mini splits. I couldn’t have asked for a better HVAC Team than SWVA Mechanicals!
I recently had a heat pump replaced by SWVA and they did an excellent job. As we were weighing the options of repairing my old system and the cost and benefit of the new system they were very helpful. I never felt they were trying to up-sale me. I especially appreciate the fast service both on the repairs I needed on my old system and with this new install. I was in a bind because it was winter but they had me up and running with a new system fast. I would highly recommend them again!
I can't say enough good about the folks at SWVA mechanical. They came to my house and quoted the Mitsubishi unit to me and I had it installed within a few weeks. Every tech was very professional and respectful while in our home and did an outstanding job. I had one company give me a quote for the same system and it was over $4000.00 more than what Brian at SW VA Mechanical quoted, plus the other company didn't want to even talk about the Mitsubishi units that have the best reputation in the business. These more efficient units will save us money on our electric bill and they are so quiet you can't even hear them run. If you need a HVAC system or just need your old system repaired, give Brian at SW VA Mechanical at call and you will not be disappointed. They are more than fair on their prices and will treat you with respect and not try to burn you up on the charges. They are my new HVAC company. Scott Beverly

Nick and Brian explained everything in detail and Jesse and Sam did our install. We are very happy with the entire process. Furnace Installation Service
Our comprehensive installation service begins with helping you choose the right furnace for your home. We will discuss the different fuel types available, including natural gas, propane, and electric models. A key factor in this decision is the furnace’s efficiency, measured by its AFUE rating. We will explain how a higher AFUE rating translates into lower long-term fuel costs. Our experts will assess your home’s needs, your budget, and your comfort goals. We provide clear, straightforward advice to help you select a high-quality furnace from a trusted brand. Our goal is to match you with a system that provides dependable warmth for many years to come.
Correctly sizing your new furnace is one of the most important steps in the installation process. A furnace that is too large for your home will heat the space too quickly and shut off. This process, called short cycling, is very inefficient and causes unnecessary wear and tear on components. Conversely, an undersized furnace will run constantly and struggle to keep your home warm on the coldest days. This causes extreme strain on the unit and leads to very high energy bills. We perform a detailed heating load calculation, or Manual J analysis, to determine the precise size your home requires. This guarantees optimal performance, efficiency, and comfort.
Before the day of your installation, our team handles all the necessary preparations. If you are replacing an old unit, the first step is its safe disconnection and removal. Our technicians will handle this process cleanly and efficiently, ensuring the old unit is disposed of properly. We take great care to protect your home during our work. We use drop cloths and other protective coverings to keep the work area and surrounding spaces clean. Our planning and preparation ensure the installation day goes as smoothly and conveniently as possible. We treat your home with the respect it deserves at all times.
The physical installation process involves several precise and critical connections. Our technicians will carefully set your new furnace in place, ensuring it is level and secure. We then connect the furnace to your home’s ductwork system, creating airtight seals for maximum airflow. For gas furnaces, one of our licensed technicians will safely connect the unit to your home’s gas line. All electrical wiring for the blower motor and system controls is then connected according to strict safety codes. Finally, we connect the new furnace to your thermostat. Each connection is meticulously checked to ensure it is safe and correct.
Properly venting a gas furnace is absolutely critical for the safety of your household. The combustion process in a furnace creates byproducts, including dangerous carbon monoxide. These gases must be safely and completely exhausted from your home. Our technicians will install the new furnace’s flue or vent pipe according to all local codes and manufacturer specifications. We ensure the vent has the correct size, pitch, and material for your specific unit. We also verify that the furnace has an adequate supply of combustion air to operate safely and efficiently. Your family’s safety is our number one concern.
After the furnace is fully installed, we perform a detailed system commissioning process. This is a vital quality control step to ensure the unit is operating safely and to manufacturer specifications. Our technician will start the furnace and check the gas pressure to ensure it is correct. We will test the full ignition sequence and verify that all safety controls are functioning properly. We also measure the temperature rise across the heat exchanger. This test confirms that the system has the proper airflow and will not overheat. We do not consider the job complete until we are certain your furnace is running perfectly.
The final step in our service is a complete walkthrough and orientation for you, the homeowner. We will show you the newly installed furnace and explain its main components. Our technician will demonstrate how to operate the system and your thermostat. We will also show you how to check and change the air filter, which is a key maintenance task. This is a perfect time for you to ask any questions you may have about your new heating system. We want to ensure you are completely comfortable and confident with your new furnace before we leave your home.

Most Common Furnace Installation Questions
Investing in a new furnace is a major decision that directly impacts your family’s comfort and safety. Homeowners in Lebanon naturally have many important questions about this process. We have answered some of the most common furnace installation questions below.
The total cost of a new furnace installation can vary significantly based on several important factors. The type of furnace you choose, whether it is natural gas, propane, or electric, will be a primary driver of the cost. The unit’s efficiency rating, or AFUE, also plays a major role; higher efficiency furnaces have a higher upfront price. The brand and specific model you select will also influence the final cost. Finally, the complexity of the installation, such as any necessary ductwork or venting modifications, will impact the total investment.
A high-efficiency furnace, one with an AFUE rating of 90% or higher, will cost more initially than a standard-efficiency model. However, this higher upfront cost is an investment that pays you back over time. A more efficient furnace uses less fuel to produce the same amount of heat. This translates directly into lower monthly utility bills for years to come. Our experts can help you calculate the potential long-term savings. We will help you determine if a high-efficiency model is the right financial choice for your household and budget.
The only way to get an exact price for your specific home is to schedule a free, in-home estimate. A technician from SWVA Mechanical will visit your home to perform a thorough evaluation. We will perform a heating load calculation, inspect your current system and ductwork, and discuss your needs. Based on this detailed assessment, we will provide you with a firm, written quote for the installation. This ensures you know the complete and final cost before making any commitment. Our pricing is always transparent and honest.
AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, and it is the standard measurement of furnace efficiency. The AFUE rating is represented as a percentage. It tells you how much of the fuel your furnace consumes is converted directly into usable heat for your home. For example, a furnace with a 95% AFUE rating converts 95 cents of every dollar you spend on fuel into heat. The remaining 5 percent is lost through the venting process. A higher AFUE percentage always means a more efficient furnace.
In Virginia, all new furnaces must meet a minimum AFUE rating established by the Department of Energy. However, you can choose to install a furnace that far exceeds this minimum standard. Furnaces are generally categorized as standard-efficiency, with an AFUE of around 80%, or high-efficiency, with an AFUE of 90% to over 98%. A high-efficiency furnace extracts more heat from the combustion process. This results in lower fuel consumption and reduced greenhouse gas emissions, making it a more environmentally friendly choice.
Choosing a high-efficiency furnace typically involves a higher initial investment. However, the fuel savings it generates can be substantial over the 15 to 20-year lifespan of the equipment. These savings on your monthly gas or propane bills can often completely offset the higher upfront cost. Our team at SWVA Mechanical can help you analyze the return on investment. We will help you select a furnace with an AFUE rating that provides the best balance of upfront cost and long-term value for your family.
For a typical furnace replacement, where a new unit is being installed in the same location as the old one, the process is quite efficient. Most standard furnace installations can be completed by our skilled technicians within a single workday. You can generally expect the entire job to take between four and eight hours. Our team arrives fully prepared with the new furnace and all necessary tools and materials. We work diligently and cohesively to minimize the disruption to your home and your daily routine. We aim to have your heat up and running by the end of the day.
The installation timeline can be longer if the project is more complex. For example, if we are installing a furnace in a home that has never had one, it will require the installation of new ductwork. This can extend the project to several days. Changing from one fuel type to another, such as from an electric furnace to a gas furnace, also adds complexity. This type of conversion requires running new gas lines and installing a new venting system. The accessibility of the installation location can also affect the time required.
At SWVA Mechanical, our focus is always on the quality and safety of the installation, not just the speed. We allocate the necessary time to ensure every connection is secure, every safety feature is tested, and the unit is running perfectly. Rushing an installation can lead to dangerous mistakes, especially when dealing with gas fuel lines. Our lead technician will provide you with a clear and realistic timeline for your specific project. We will keep you informed of our progress every step of the way.
The choice between a gas furnace and an electric furnace depends on several factors, including fuel availability and operating costs. Natural gas furnaces are the most popular choice in areas where a gas line is available. The primary advantage of a gas furnace is its lower operating cost. Natural gas is typically less expensive per unit of energy than electricity in Virginia. This means a gas furnace will generally result in lower monthly heating bills. Gas furnaces also tend to produce a more powerful, hotter heat, which many homeowners prefer in very cold weather.
Electric furnaces, on the other hand, often have a lower upfront purchase and installation cost. They are also a great option for homes that do not have access to a natural gas line. Electric furnaces are extremely efficient in converting energy to heat, with AFUE ratings near 100%. However, because the price of electricity is higher than gas, their operating costs are usually significantly higher. An electric furnace may be a suitable choice for a smaller home or in a milder climate where it is not used as frequently.
Ultimately, for most homeowners in our region with access to natural gas, a gas furnace is the more economical long-term choice. Our experts at SWVA Mechanical can help you compare the lifetime costs of both options. We will consider the installation price plus the estimated annual fuel costs for your home. This will give you a clear picture of which fuel type makes the most financial sense for your specific situation. We are here to provide the data you need to make an informed decision.
The most obvious sign that you might need a new furnace is its age. Most furnaces have a typical operational lifespan of about 15 to 20 years. If your furnace is approaching or has exceeded this age range, it is running on borrowed time. It will be less efficient than modern units, and it is at a much higher risk of a major breakdown. If your furnace is over 15 years old, you should start planning for its replacement rather than waiting for it to fail completely. This is the number one indicator.
Another clear sign is a need for frequent and expensive repairs. If you find yourself calling for furnace repairs every winter, those costs can add up quickly. At some point, it no longer makes financial sense to keep investing money into an old, unreliable unit. A good rule of thumb is if a repair costs 50% or more of what a new furnace would cost, replacement is the smarter option. A sudden and unexplained rise in your winter heating bills is another strong indicator that your old furnace is losing its efficiency.
You should also pay attention to the performance and sounds of your furnace. If you notice uneven heating with hot and cold spots throughout your home, the furnace may no longer be able to distribute air effectively. Loud or unusual noises like rattling, banging, or squealing are signs of mechanical failure. Finally, any visible signs of rust, corrosion, or cracks on the furnace itself are a clear indication that the unit has reached the end of its life. These signs mean you should call for a professional assessment.
We cannot state this strongly enough: you should never attempt to install a furnace yourself. This is a complex and potentially very dangerous job that should only be performed by a licensed and trained professional. The risks associated with a DIY gas furnace installation are extremely high. An improper connection to the gas line can lead to a gas leak. A natural gas leak is highly flammable and can cause a devastating explosion or fire in your home. This risk alone is why professional installation is paramount.
Beyond the risk of fire, an improper installation can lead to deadly carbon monoxide poisoning. The furnace’s vent system must be installed perfectly to ensure all combustion gases are exhausted outside. A small mistake in the venting can cause colorless, odorless carbon monoxide to leak into your home’s air. A DIY installation also involves high-voltage electrical wiring, which presents a serious risk of electrocution if handled incorrectly. For the safety of you and your family, this job must be left to the experts who are trained to manage these risks.
In addition to the immense safety hazards, installing a furnace yourself will void the manufacturer’s warranty. Manufacturers require proof of installation by a licensed contractor to honor their warranties. A DIY installation also will not meet local building code requirements, which can create problems if you ever sell your home. You will also lack the specialized tools and knowledge to size the unit correctly or commission it safely. The minimal savings are not worth the massive risks to your safety, property, and financial protection.
While it is not always a strict requirement, it is highly recommended that you replace your air conditioner at the same time as your furnace. Your furnace and air conditioner are not two completely separate systems. They work together as a single, integrated HVAC system. They share the same indoor blower motor, which is located inside the furnace, to circulate both heated and cooled air. They also share the same network of ductwork throughout your home. A new furnace paired with an old air conditioner creates what is known as a “mismatched” system.
Installing a new, fully matched system provides several significant benefits. Manufacturers design their furnaces and air conditioners to work together for optimal performance and efficiency. A matched system will achieve its full advertised efficiency ratings, like SEER and AFUE. A mismatched system will almost always be less efficient, which means higher energy bills for both heating and cooling. By replacing both at once, you can also save on labor costs by combining the two jobs into a single project. This minimizes the disruption to your home as well.
When you replace both components, you are getting a brand new, reliable system with a full warranty on all parts. If you keep your old air conditioner, it will still be further along in its lifespan and more likely to fail soon. This would require another separate installation project down the road. Our technicians at SWVA Mechanical will always assess the condition of your air conditioner when we replace your furnace. We can provide you with the information you need to decide if replacing both at once is the right choice for you.
A new furnace comes with two important warranties that protect your investment. The first and most significant is the manufacturer’s warranty, which covers the physical parts of the equipment. This warranty is typically broken into two parts. Most brands offer a 10-year limited warranty on all standard functional parts, such as the gas valve, ignitor, and blower motor. They then offer a separate, longer warranty on the heat exchanger, which is the most expensive component of the furnace. This heat exchanger warranty is often for 20 years or even the lifetime of the original owner.
It is critically important that you register your new furnace with the manufacturer shortly after installation. Most manufacturers require product registration within 60 to 90 days. If you fail to register, the warranty period often reverts to a much shorter, unregistered term of only 5 years on parts. As part of our service, SWVA Mechanical can assist you with this registration process. This ensures you receive the maximum warranty protection available for your new equipment. We want to make sure your investment is fully covered.
The second type of warranty is the labor warranty, which is provided by us, your installation contractor. A labor warranty covers the cost of our workmanship for a specified period after the installation. If an issue arises due to the installation itself, we will return to correct it at no charge. The terms of a labor warranty can vary, and we are always clear and upfront about the coverage we provide. The combination of a strong manufacturer’s parts warranty and our own labor warranty gives you complete peace of mind in your new furnace.
